Three Retrievers and a Terrier Start Season Strong, Garner First 2009-10 Indoor Track and Field Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass – Posting ECAC/IC4A-qualifying times in their first races of the 2009-2010 season, UMBC senior Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Boston University freshman Nikko Brady ran away with the first male and female Indoor Track Performer of the Week accolades of the season. UMBC senior Victor Gilreath (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech/Maryland) and freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), who also earned ECAC/IC4A-qualifying marks at the Bison Opener, claim the male and female Field Performer of the Week honors for the week ending December 6.

Arthur finished third in the 60m dash at the Bison Opener to begin his senior season with the Retrievers. He won the race with a time of 6.89, which qualified him for the IC4A Championship in March. Arthur’s time was .01 seconds off of his time in the 60m at last year’s Bison Opener.

In her first race as a Terrier, Brady captured the 55m hurdle title at the Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern. She won with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.27. Brady also finished tied with teammate Whitney Ford for first in the long jump with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 5.70m.

Last year’s America East high jump champion, Gilreath won the Bison Opener high jump with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 2.04m. He also placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.38m, which qualifies him for the IC4A Championship.

Dellar claimed first in the shot put in her UMBC debut on Saturday. To take the title, Dellar threw an ECAC-qualifying distance of 13.68m. Her throw bests the mark of last year’s America East shot put champion by .02m.

Albany – The Great Danes men’s and women’s squads will begin their season January 9 when they send their multi-eventers to the Dartmouth relays while the rest of the team competes at the Yale Collegiate Invitational.

Binghamton – The Bearcats opened their indoor track and field season at the Cornell Indoor relays. No team scoring was kept for the event.  Sophomore Kaitlin Sullivan (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) claimed the 60m hurdles title for the Bearcat women, winning the race in 9.14. Freshman Jessica Hennig (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) placed second in the 300m dash in her first race as a Bearcat with a time of 41.38 while classmate Jenna Maririone (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) claimed third in the pole vault with a final height of 3.3m. On the men’s side, 2009 America East Most Outstanding Track Performer, junior Cazal Arnett (Jamaica, N.Y./ Christ the King) started his season out with a win in the 300m dash in 34.66. Freshman Devinn Askew (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) and sophomore Jesse Fuca (Warwick, N.Y./UConn) also turned in top finishes for the men, claiming third in the 60m dash and second in the 60m hurdles with times of 7.00 and 8.51, respectively. Askew’s time in the 60m dash was only .02 off an IC4A-qualifying time. In the field events for the men, sophomore Eric VanAernam (Gardiner, N.Y./Wallkill) claimed second in the pole vault with an IC4A-qualifying height of 5.00m. The Binghamton men also went 1-2 in the 4x400 relay. The Bearcats return to action January 16.

Boston U. – Both Terrier squads opened their seasons at the Jay Carisella Invitational. Nikko Brady turned in a strong performance on Saturday to start her Boston U. track and field career. Brady tied for first in the long jump with senior teammate Whitney Ford (White Plains, N.Y.) with a jump of 5.70m. Brady then claimed the 55m hurdles title with a time of 8.15. Ford also captured a second-place finish in the 55m dash in 7.32 ahead of junior Laura Martin (Tacoma, Wash.), who placed fourth in 7.38. Martin later won the 200m dash with a time of 24.92. The Terriers 4x400 relay team also recorded a win on Saturday, crossing the finish line first in 3:57.35. The Boston U. men were led by junior Joel Senick (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), who was the only Terrier runner to claim a title at the meet. Senick won the 500m dash in 1:04.66. Freshman Duran Ward also started his first season as a Terrier with a strong performance, finishing second in the 55m dash in 6:49 and fourth in the 200m in 22.31 while classmate Sam Arsenault also posted two top-five finishes, placing third in the 55m hurdles and fifth, tied with junior teammate Rich Haigh (Orange, Conn.), in the high jump. Boston U. next competes at the Harvard Invitational on December 12.

Hartford – The Hawks fell to Vermont in a dual meet to open their 2009-10 season. Between the men’s and women’s squads, seven school records fell on Saturday. Freshman Brittney Lawson led the women in her first meet as a Hawk, claiming a title in the shot put with a throw of 11.20 meters and second place in the 20lb weight throw with a throw of 13.37 meters. In both events, Lawson set new school records. Senior Ariana Bass (Penacook, N.H./Concord), and sophomores Nicole Adams (Schoharie, N.Y./Schoharie) and Caitlyn Hauswirth (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) also picked up wins for Hartford. Bass captured an individual title in the 800m run with a school-record time of 2:23.01. She also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that won in 4:08.07. Adams claimed her individual title in the long jump while Hauswirth won the pole vault, setting a school-record height of 2.85m. The Hartford men claimed six individual and one relay victory on Saturday. Junior Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) posted an individual win in the 500m in 1:07.29 and ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that won in 3:29.50. Graduate student Mike DuPaul (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) also captured a title in the 1,000m, setting a new school record of 2:35.24. In the field events freshmen Ackeme Brown (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow) and Chasani Douglas (Goshen, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) and sophomore Anthony Green (White Plains, N.Y./Woodlands) recorded wins in the long jump, triple jump and weight throw, respectively. The Hawks return to action at the Wesleyan Invitational on January 23.

Maine – The Black Bears open their season on Saturday, December 12 against New Hampshire.

UMBC – The Retrievers captured five events at the Bison Opener to begin their season. Victor Gilreath claimed one title for the UMBC men, winning the high jump with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 2.04m. Gilreath also placed second in the triple jump with an IC4A-qualifying jump of 14.38m. Freshman Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) posted another victory for the men, winning the shot put with a throw of 15.14m in his debut as a Retriever. Junior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) and sophomore Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) earned two more titles, placing first in the long jump and the 500m dash. Onto also placed third in the 60m hurdles. Seniors Adrian Arthur, Jason Powell (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) also claimed top-three finishes for the UMBC men. Arthur finished third in the 60m dash with an IC4A-qualifying time of 6.89 while Powell earned third in the 200m. Pugh placed second in the 60m hurdles ahead of Onto. Amanda Dellar captured the only title for the women, winning the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 13.68m in her first meet as a Retriever. Senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and freshman Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) also garnered top-three finishes, placing third in the 60m dash and the high jump, respectively. Sophomore Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) finished fifth in the 60m hurdles, but posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.80. UMBC will next compete in the Gulden Relays on January 9.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats opened their season at the non-team scoring Jay Carisella Invitational. The New Hampshire men’s squad was led by graduate student Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) and sophomore Bill Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack), who both captured individual wins on Saturday. Kaste won the weight throw with a toss of 18.30m while Godfrey won the 1,000m run with a time of 2:32.76. Kaste also placed fifth in the shot put. Senior Anthony Vorachak turned in two top-five performances for the Wildcats, finishing second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump while three runners also turned in top-three finishes. On the women’s side, senior Kelly Thomas (Chichester, N.H./Pembroke) and junior Kaitlyn Dugan (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn Senior) finished third and fourth, respectively, at the URI Pentathlon while the rest of the women’s squad competed at the Jay Carisella Invitational. Senior Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y./Sherburne-Earlville) led the women, finishing second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.45m. Junior Jasmin Washington (Waltham, Mass./Waltham Senior) and senior Amanda Hutchins (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth) also turned in top-five finishes for the women, placing third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. New Hampshire returns to action on December 12 in a dual meet against Maine.

Stony Brook – On Friday night at Fordham, the sophomore class led the Seawolves in the season-opening meet. Sophomore Mark Appledorf (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) claimed the top finish by a Seawolf, placing second in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:12.20. The Stony Brook squads claimed 14 other top-five finishes. Sophomores Justine Noel (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), Jillian Fauser (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Mary O’Connor (Waterford, Ireland/St. Agenlas Secondary School) earned third-place finishes for the women in the 800m (2:28.70), the 1,000m (3:09.00) and the mile run (5:12.20), respectively. Sophomore Matt Carnes (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) earned a third-place finish for the men in the shot put with a toss of 13.15m while senior Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y./Francis Lewis) claimed third in the 1,000m. The Seawolves next compete in 2010 when they compete in the NYU Invitational on January 15.

Vermont – The Catamounts won 19 events to defeat Hartford in their season home opener. Sophomore Marie Fourie (Waterloo, Ontario/Ontario Schools) and senior Aaron Campbell (Bend, Ore./Summit) led the squads each posting a win and setting a new facility record. Fourie claimed the 55m hurdle title with a facility record time of 8.38 while Campbell won the 55m race with a facility record mark of 6.44. Seniors Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Wissahickon), Aly Millett (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and Justin Scricca (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) added to the Catamount tally, capturing first in the men’s and women’s 3,000m and the men’s 300m, respectively. The Vermont rookies also turned in strong first performances with three earning their first collegiate victories. Mitchell Switzer (Phoenix, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough) placed first in the men’s 55m hurdles with a time of 8.15 while Ryan Sleeper (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) also earned a victory for the men in the mile run with a time of 4:28.35. Rookie Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) picked up a win for the women, crossing the finish line first in the 500m in 1:19.73.  In the field events for the women, sophomore Ase Lundin (Kullavik, Sweden/Universal School) won the triple jump with a mark of 11.17m and took second in the high jump behind teammate senior Hannah Sylvester (North Hero, Vt./Governors Academy). On the men’s side, junior Beau Cameron (Grand Isle, Vt./Essex) won the men’s high jump with a mark of 1.93m while sophomore Tom Martin (Chester, Vt./Green Mountain) claimed the pole vault title. The Catamounts begin their 2010 schedule on January 15 at the Sorlien Memorial Invitational hosted by Rhode Island.
