CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of New Hampshire freshman Shelli Reed (Hollister, Cali./San Benito) captured three titles on Sunday to lead her team to a four point win over Vermont and is this week’s female Swimmer of the Week. Stony Brook University freshman Ivan Kopas (Kikinda, Serbia/Technical School Kikinda) earns the male Swimmer of the Week award after breaking school records in his first season as a Seawolf while Boston U. junior divers Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla) and Sarah Colton (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) continue the Terriers’ diving dominance and claim the male and female Diver of the Week honors for the week ending December 6.
Strong in her first season as a Wildcat, Reed claimed two individual and one relay win to help New Hampshire defeat Vermont. Reed swam the second leg of the 400 free relay that won in a time of 3:33.77 and secured the win for the Wildcats. She also touched first in the 100 free in 52.77 and the 100 fly with a personal-best time of 58.29. In the 100 free, Reed already holds the seventh spot in the America East performance list, but with her swim in the 100 fly, Reed moves into the top-10. She placed second in the 50 free with a time of 24.02, which is good enough for sixth in the standings.
Kopas has become an asset to the Seawolves in his rookie season. Against Boston U. this past weekend, Kopas captured two titles with school-record breaking times. He won the 100 back with a time of 49.29 and the 200 back in 1:49.39. Kopas’ time in the 200 back moves him to second-place in the conference standings. In the 100 back, Kopas now tops the performance list by over a second and is just out of the top-50 nationally, coming in at 51.
Tanner Knorr earned his fifth diving honor of the season by sweeping the diving events in the meet against Stony Brook. Knorr swept both board events winning the one-meter with a score of 323.83 and the three-meter with a score of 270.80. Knorr tops the performance list in both events.
Colton earns her first diving award of the year after winning her first diving events this season. She swept the diving events, placing first in the one and three-meter with scores of 259.50 and 261.30, respectively. Colton topped her season-best score in the one-meter.
Binghamton – The Bearcat squads fell to Cornell on December 5 in their final meet of 2009. Top swimmers for Binghamton this season, juniors Jason Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) each posted two individual wins for their teams. Chen led the men, capturing the 200 free in 1:44.68 and the 100 fly in 51.99 while Ciccone led the women with wins in the 100 free in 52.44 and 100 fly in 58.22. Chen’s times in the 200 free and the 100 fly move him into the top-10 for both events in the conference’s performance list. Ciccone’s time in the 100 free is a personal season-best. Sophomore Joe Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, N.Y./Woodstock) also picked up a victory for the Bearcat men, touching first in the 100 back with a time of 51.75. Perez-Rogers remains in the top-10 in the conference standings, but betters his season-best time. Freshman Andrew Ellman (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep ) claimed a fourth individual title for the Bearcat men, winning the 200 IM in a time of 2:02.02 while sophomore Maria Mazzoni (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea ) and senior Taryn Ferrara (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) built on Ciccone’s two titles, claiming the 500 free in 5:23.98 and the 200 IM in 2:16.69, respectively. Ellman’s time moves him into the top-20 in the 200 IM America East standings. On the boards, sophomore Nick Turner (Pelham Manor, N.Y./Fordham Prep) placed second in the one-meter and fourth in the three-meter with scores of 262.87 and 259.20, respectively. With his score of 262.87 in the one-meter, Turner claims the second spot in the performance list. Binghamton returns to action on January 16 against St. Bonaventure.
Boston U. – On Saturday afternoon, both Terrier squads posted wins over Stony Brook with the Boston U. women remaining undefeated in dual-meet action this season. Freshman Lauren Drake (Wuerzburg, Germany/Heidelberg) led the women, claiming three individual wins. Drake’s first win came in the 50 free with a time of 24.20. She then claimed the 100 free in 52.16 and the 200 IM in 2:09.91. Drake is in the top-five in the America East standings for all three events. Senior Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte) also turned in a top performance for the Terriers, capturing an individual and relay title on Saturday. Munday first swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay that won in a time of 1:47.07. She then captured an individual win in the 100 breast in 1:05.36. Munday’s time in the 100 breast places her in fifth in the conference performance list. On the boards for the women, Sarah Colton led the Terriers in a sweep of both events. Colton won the one and three-meter with scores of 259.50 and 261.30, respectively. On the men’s side, senior Arik Seiler (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Daniel Kempf (Austin, Texas/Lyndon Banies Johnson) each claimed two individual titles to lead the men over the Seawolves. Seiler posted wins in the 200 free in 1:42.05 and the 200 IM in 1:54.67 while Kempf claimed both the 50 free in 21.07 and the 100 fly in 51.78. Seiler and Kempf also both swam legs of the 200 medley relay that won in 1:34.75. Kempf claimed a second relay victory in the 200 free relay to complete the meet with a win for the Terriers. On the boards, Tanner Knorr swept the diving events, capturing the one and the three-meter with scores of 323.83 and 270.80, respectively. On Sunday, freshman female diver Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) competed at the Georgia Invitational where she placed second on the 10-meter platform with a score of 260.05. This was the first time this season that Matyas competed in the 10-meter event. The Terriers return in 2010 when they travel to Dartmouth on January 10.
Maine – The Black Bears compete in their last meet of 2009 on December 12 against Bates College.
UMBC – The Retrievers have completed their 2009 schedule and will return to action on January 9.
New Hampshire- New Hampshire narrowly defeated Vermont 152-148 on Sunday in its first conference meet of the year. With strong showings from their underclassmen, the Wildcats won nine events. Freshman Mallory Morrell (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) captured an individual title in the 50 free in 24.02 and relay wins in the 200 medley and the 400 free relay. Also a member of the victorious 400 free relay, Shelli Reed captured two individual titles along with her relay win. Reed won the 100 fly and 100 free in times of 58.29 and 52.77, respectively. In the 100 fly, Reed ranks in the top-10 in the performance list. Sophomore Jessica Little (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie Central Collegiate Institute) added to the Wildcats’ tally, posting two individual wins in the 200 breast and the 200 IM with times of 2:24.63 and 2:08.69, respectively. Little is third in the America East standings for both events. Junior Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead), a member of the winning 200 medley relay, also claimed a victory in the 100 breast in 1:05.03. On the boards, freshman Ellen Pelletier (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) won the one-meter dive with a score of 221.55. The dual meet against Vermont completes the Wildcats’ 2009 schedule. New Hampshire will return to action against Northeastern and Boston U. on January 18 to start its 2010 schedule.
Stony Brook – Both Seawolves squads fell to conference rival Boston U. on Saturday. Ivan Kopas led the men, posting two individual wins in the 100 and 200 back. Kopas won the 100 back with a time of 49.29, which puts him atop the conference standings. Kopas’ victory in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.39 moves him to second in the performance list. Sophomores Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y./Michigan State) and Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) also claimed wins for the Seawolves, touching first in the 100 breast and 100 free, respectively. Gonzalez led a 1-2 finish in the 100 breast, winning with a time of 1:01.50. Conway recorded a win in the 100 free with a time of 46.84, which moves him into the top-10 in the conference. He also placed second in the 200 free in 1:43.21. On the women’s side, four swimmers picked up titles for Stony Brook. Juniors Adrienne Policht (Mississauga, Ontario/Michael Power) and Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia/Korolev Secondary) finished first in the 200 back and 200 breast with times of 2:11.97 and 2:24.62, respectively. Kiryushkina bettered her season-best time in the 200 breast and also captured two other top-three finishes at the meet, placing second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breast. Also, claiming titles for the women were sophomore Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and freshman Julie Policht (Mississauga, Ontario/Michael Power). Heuser won the 200 free in 1:55.02 and swam the last leg of the 200 free relay that won in 1:39.11 while Policht won the 200 fly in 2:08.87, which puts her just out of the top-10 in the conference standings, at 11th. Freshman Renee Rosenkranz (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover/Our Lady of Lourdes) also turned in a strong performance for Stony Brook, posting two second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 free. The Seawolves return to action today at 3 p.m. against St. Francis (N.Y.).
Vermont – Over the weekend, the Catamounts fell to Yale and then lost to conference foe New Hampshire in a meet decided by the final race. On Saturday against Yale, freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) was the only Vermont swimmer to capture a title, placing first in the 1,000 with a time of 10:21.26. Gardner moves to third in the performance list. Top swimmers for Vermont all season, senior Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) led the women in the meet against UNH, posting two individual wins apiece. MacMillian posted a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.78, which places her in the top-15 in the performance list. She also led a Vermont sweep of the 500 free, touching first with a time of 5:03.52. MacMillian’s time of 5:03.52 garners her a spot in the top-10 in the conference standings. Weaver, who has been strong for the Catamounts in the backstroke events, swept both back events on Sunday. Weaver won the 100 and 200 back with times of 57.91 and 2:04.46, respectively. In the 200 back, Weaver takes over second in the performance list while in the 100 back she moves into the top-five. Kailey Gardner and sophomore Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) also each captured a first-place finish for the Catamounts, winning the 1,000 free with a time of 10:36.07 and the 200 fly in 2:08.45, respectively. Gardner remains undefeated in the 1,000 free event this season and Pittman moves to 10th in the performance list with her 200 fly swim on Sunday. On the boards, sophomore Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass./Andover) won the three-meter dive with a score of 225.45, moving into the top-five in the conference standings. The Catamounts begin their 2010 schedule when they host Dartmouth on January 9.
