Women's Basketball: Two Ranked Opponents On Tap and Holiday Tournaments Wrap Up

Every gameday throughout the 2009-10 season, America East will provide a women's basketball update that features notes on that day's matchups as well as recaps of the previous day's action. Wednesday, December 30
Albany at #13/14 Nebraska    4 p.m.

  • The Great Danes head to Lincoln, the hometown of senior guard Charity Iromuanya. Iromuanya is the only Great Dane in double-figure scoring, averaging 10.6 ppg, and leads the team with 3.0 spg.
  • Four of the next five Albany scorers are newcomers this season, led by 9.6 ppg each from freshmen Ebone Henry and Julie Forster.
Vermont vs. Rhode Island (Blue Sky Classic)    5 p.m.
  • The Catamounts will face their former coach in current Rams' mentor Cathy Inglese. Inglese coached in Burlington 1986-93 and led Vermont to two undefeated regular seasons and two league titles.
  • After missing the first three games of the season due to injury, junior Tonya Young has scored in double figures in four of her eight games, and has been inserted into the lineup for the past two contests.

Maine vs. Stephen F. Austin (UTSA New Year's Classic)    6 p.m.

  • The Black Bears and Ladyjacks have met just once before, a 2000 overtime victory for SFA.
  • Senior Kristin Baker's 22 points last time out against UTSA was a season high. It improved her season average to 10.9 ppg.

New Hampshire at #23 Syracuse    7 p.m.

  • The Orange are the second ranked opponents the Wildcats have faced this season having previously taken on then-#21 Maryland.
  • Both senior Candace Williams (12.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and sophomore Denise Beliveau (12.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg) rank in the America East top-15 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.

Bowling Green at Hartford    7 p.m.

  • The Hawks will be putting their 5-0 homecourt record on the line when they try to exact revenge on BGSU for a 52-56 loss in Ohio last season.
  • Senior center Diana Delva has recorded three straight double-doubles for a total of five on the season. She leads the team with 14.5 ppg and 8.9 rpg.

UMBC 62, at Fordham 56 (Fordham Holiday Classic)

  • Senior Carlee Cassidy led the Retrievers to victory for the second day in a row, scoring 18 points, connecting on 6-for-16 from the field, 2-for-8 from long-distance and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
  • Also for the second straight game, UMBC overcame a slow start, trailing 31-18 at the half and opening the second stanza on a 17-2 run.


East Carolina 86, Binghamton 82 (OT) (Fordham Holiday Classic)

  • Binghamton gave the Pirates all they could handle, but East Carolina shot 83.3% from the field in the overtime period to pull out the victory.
  • Bearcat sophomore guard Andrea Holmes scored a game-high 28 points, the third time this season she has reached the 20-point plateau.


at Saint Joseph's 71, Boston U. 58 (Saint Joseph's Hawk Classic)   

  • Freshman Chantell Alford led the Terriers with 20 points, three assists, two steals and one block.
  • Classmate Mo Moran and sophomore Alex Young netted 14 points a piece while combining for five steals and nine rebounds on the afternoon.


Vermont 74, Dayton 65 (Blue Sky Classic)   

  • This first-round match-up featured two teams both receiving votes in the national polls. Vermont led, 30-28, at the half and pulled away in the second stanza.
  • The Catamounts' effort was fueled by junior Tonya Young's career-high 25 points. Senior Courtnay Pilypaitis was one rebound shy of a double-double, compiling 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals and one block for the night.


at UTSA 79, Maine 71 (UTSA New Year's Classic)   

  • Sophomore Samantha Wheeler recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Kristin Baker scored a game-high 22 points. Senior Amanda Tewksbury joined them in double digits with 11 points.
  • Baker shot 7-for-15 from the field, 4-for-8 from three-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Wheeler scored nine of her points from the foul line as well, making all of her attempts.
