Maine Captures Weekly Swimming and Diving Honors to End 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Maine senior Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) led the Black Bear women to victory over Bates College on Saturday and earns this week’s female Swimmer of the Week honor. Maine sophomore Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) picked up three wins at the meet on Saturday and claims the male Swimmer of the Week award for the week ending December 13.

Fisher captured two individual titles and a relay victory against Bates College. Fisher helped lead the 200 medley relay to victory in 1:53.12. She also won the 100 and 200 fly events, touching first in 59.48 and 2:10.73, respectively. Fisher’s time in the 100 fly moves her into the top-20 in the America East standings while her time in the 200 fly is a personal season-best. Fisher captures the first female Swimmer of the Week award for Maine this season.

Landry tallied three individual titles on Saturday, but the men lost by six points to the Bobcats. He won the 100 breast in 1:02.76, the 200 breast in 2:17.44 and the 200 IM in 2:04.97. A top swimmer for Maine this season, Landry posted a personal season-best time in the 200 IM. Landry is the first swimmer from Maine’s men’s team to win a weekly award this season.

Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week will return on January 12.

Binghamton – The Bearcat women’s squad ends their 2009 schedule with a 4-4 dual-meet record while the Bearcat men enter their 2010 schedule with a record of 2-3. Both squads look to improve their records in 2010 when they travel to St. Bonaventure on Saturday, January 16.

Boston U. – With a win over conference rival Stony Brook, the Terrier women end the 2009 portion of their season with a 7-0 dual meet record.  Boston U.’s men’s squad completes the first half of its season 4-2. Both teams will return to action on January 10 against Dartmouth.

Maine – The Black Bears women’s squad ended its 2009 schedule with a win over Bates College while the men lost by six points to the Bobcats. Meaghann Fisher and freshman Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) led the women, earning two individual titles and a relay win each. Together the pair led the 200 medley relay team to victory with a time of 1:53.12. Fisher then captured individual titles in the 100 and 200 fly in times of 59.48 and 2:10.73, respectively. In the 100 fly, Fisher moves into the top-20 in the America East performance list. She also posted a personal season-best time in the 200 fly. Linden won the 50 and 100 free events, touching first with times of 25.43 and 54.96, respectively. Sophomore Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and freshman Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) also claimed two individual victories each for Maine. Thornbrough won the 200 and 500 free while Trodden touched first in the 100 and 200 breast in 1:08.94 and 2:28.88, respectively. Trodden posted a personal season-best time in the 100 breast and places 15th in the conference standings. On the men’s side, Brian Landry and freshman Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) continued to lead the Black Bear squad. Landry captured three first-place finishes, winning the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM. Landry raced to a personal season-best time in the 200 IM, touching first in 2:04.97. Chornobil posted wins in the 500 and 1,000 free with times of 5:03.77 and 10:21.99, respectively. Maine will return to action on January 15 at Providence College.

UMBC – The Retriever men, 3-1 in dual meets, ended their 2009 schedule with a first-place finish at the Patriot Invitational.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats end the 2009 portion of their season with a win over conference rival Vermont to go 5-0 in dual meets. New Hampshire will return to the pool on January 18 when it hosts Northeastern and Boston U.

Stony Brook – The Seawolves squads swept St. Francis (N.Y.) on Tuesday in their final meet of 2009. Stony Brook won the first 12 straight events, starting with the women’s 200 medley relay. Freshman Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia/St. Joseph) added to the Stony Brook tally, capturing her first individual win as a Seawolf. Sreckovic won the 200 free in 1:58.21. Junior Adrienne Policht (Mississauga, Ontario/Michael Power) also turned in a strong performance for the squad, first swimming the opening leg of the victorious 200 medley relay before capturing the 100 free in 55.91. Policht’s time was a personal season-best. The men also captured their first relay of the meet, touching first in the 200 medley with a time of 1:42.34. Junior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland/Kosciuszko Memorial) was the only Seawolf to claim two individual titles at the meet, touching first in the 100 and 200 free in 47.74 and 1:44.12, respectively. Ochmanski’s time in the 100 free moves him into the top-15 in the America East performance list while his time in the 200 free places him just out of the top-10, ranking 11th. Sophomore Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) also claimed two wins, swimming the first leg of the winning 200 medley and touching first in the 100 back with a time of 57.09. Stony Brook next competes in a dual meet against Lafayette on January 16.

Vermont – The Catamounts enter the break 6-4 in dual meets and 2-3 in league meets after suffering a close loss to New Hampshire. Vermont will return to action on Saturday, January 9 when it plays host to Dartmouth.
