CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Against challenging competition, UMBC senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) and Boston University sophomore Dan Kempf (Austin, Texas/Lyndon Banies Johnson) posted top national times to earn this week’s female and male Swimmer of the Week awards. Continuing to turn in top scores, Terrier divers junior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla) and freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) take home the male and female Diver of the Week honors for the week ending November 22.
Maccherola led the UMBC women to their second George Mason Patriot Invitational title in three years this past weekend. Maccherola claimed two individual victories and one relay win against steep competition, including UNC-Wilmington, which is ranked eighth in the mid-major poll. Winning the 500 free in 4:52.53, Maccherola takes over the top spot in the America East performance list and earns a spot in the top-50 nationally. She claimed her other individual win in the 200 free, setting a meet record and posting another top-50 national time. Her relay win came in the 400 medley, which UMBC won with a time of 3:49.61, a time that ranks 45th in the nation.
Claiming five titles over the weekend, Kempf led the men to a first-place finish at the Terrier Invitational. Kempf posted two individual wins, touching first in the 50 free in 20.60 and the 100 free in 45.38. His time in the 50 free ranks him at 48th in the nation while his time in the 100 free puts him atop the conference standings. Kempf’s three relay wins came in the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free. Kempf’s 200 free relay squad posted a time of 1:22:39 and is ranked 18th in the country while the 400 free relay squad and the 800 relay team are ranked 24th nationally after posting times of 3:02.95 and 6:48.83, respectively.
Competing at the Harvard Invitational over the weekend, Knorr turned in two of his top scores of the season. Knorr placed second in the one-meter with a score of 562.75. Then on Sunday, he placed fourth in the three-meter with a final score of 595.85. This is Knorr’s fourth weekly award of the 2009 season.
Dominant on the boards in her first year as a Terrier, Matyas garners her sixth-straight weekly honor. Matyas claimed the one-meter title at the Harvard Invitational, posting a score of 538.95. She then posted a third-place finish on the three-meter with a score of 580.90, which set a new conference open record.
Binghamton – The Bearcat men’s squad defeated Marist while the women’s squad fell to Marist, but captured a win over Siena on Saturday. Junior Jason Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and sophomore Joe Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, N.Y./Woodstock) led the men, both starting off the day with a win for Binghamton in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.92. Chen then captured three individual titles for the men, touching first in the 100 breast, the 100 free and the 200 IM in times of 1:01.09, 48.08 and 2:00.21, respectively. Chen’s time in the 100 breast events places him in the top-10 in the America East performance list while his times in the 100 free and 200 IM put him in the top-15 for both events. Perez-Rogers posted individual wins in the 100 back and 100 fly with times of 52.24 and 52.18, respectively. While Perez-Rogers already holds the third spot in the 100 back conference standings, his time in the 100 fly puts him in the top-10 of that event. On the boards, sophomore Nick Turner (Pelham Manor, N.Y./Fordham Prep) placed second in the one and three-meter diving events. Junior Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) continued to lead the Bearcat women, claiming three individual victories. Ciccone won the 50 free in 24.46, the 100 free in 53.45 and the 200 IM in 2:09.25. Sixth in the conference standings for the 50 free and top-15 in the 100 free, Ciccone takes over the third spot in the performance list for the 200 IM with her time on Saturday. Also a top swimmer for the Bearcat women this season, freshman Tin Wai Siu (Hong Kong, China/S.T.F.A. Leung Kau Kui College) posted two individual wins, touching first in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 58.37 and 2:08.99, respectively. Siu is already top-three in both events in the conference standings. The Binghamton women finished the meet with a win in the 400 free relay in 3:40.57. The Bearcats next compete on December 5 at Cornell.
Boston U. – Both Terrier squads won their annual Terrier Invitational this past weekend. The women broke seven records over the weekend led by sophomore Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) who set three new records. On day one of competition, Schmitz broke the 500 free school record with a time of 4:56.34, bettering the school record set in 1988 by over a second. Schmitz bested her season-best time by over six seconds. Also on Friday, junior Maria McIntyre (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) not only set a new school record, but also topped the 11-year-old conference record by .03 seconds, touching first in the 50 free with a time of 23 seconds flat. McIntyre’s time earns her a spot in the top-10 in the nation for the event. Before her 50 free record-setting swim, McIntyre swam the last leg of the 200 free relay, which won with a time of 1:33.42. On day two of the Invitational, Schmitz broke her second record, claiming the 400 IM in a time of 4:20.31. Schmitz already tops the event in the conference standings but bests her time by seven seconds. Schmitz capped off her weekend by winning the 200 fly in 2:01, 56, besting her own school record mark. Over the weekend, seniors Brigette O’Shaughnessy (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) and Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte) also broke school records in the 1,650 free and 100 fly, respectively. On day one of the men’s competition, senior Arik Seiler (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Daniel Kempf both posted a relay and an individual win. Their relay victory came in the 200 free relay which the team won in 1:22.39. Seiler then captured the men’s first individual win, touching first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.94. Seiler takes over the top spot in the conference standings with his time of 1:51.94. Kempf followed Seiler’s win with a victory in the 50 free in 20.60. On day two, juniors Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and Bryon Kallert (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) led the men. Both were members of the winning 200 medley relay and each posted an individual win. Ernst won the 100 breast in 56.56 while Kallert claimed the 100 back in 50.32. Ernst already tops the conference performance list, but betters his time while Kallert takes over the top spot in the 100 back. On Sunday, Ernest captured his second individual win of the weekend, touching first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:02.75. Ernest’s time breaks the school record and puts him in the top-20 in the nation for the event. The Terrier divers competed at the Harvard Invitational with Tanner Knorr placing second on the one-meter and fourth on the three-meter men’s boards with scores of 562.75 and 595.85, respectively. In the women’s diving events Melinda Matyas won the one-meter and claimed third in the three-meter with scores of 538.95 and 580.90, respectively. Boston U. divers next compete at the University of Georgia Invite while the swimmers next compete against Stony Brook on December 5.
Maine – At the Terrier Invitational, the Black Bears men’s and women’s squads placed fifth and eighth, respectively. Freshman Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) remained a top swimmer for the men’s squad, placing eighth in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:27.05. Sophomore Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) also turned in a top swim for Maine, finishing 11th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.45. Landry already holds a top-10 conference time for the event. The Black Bear 400 free relay team of sophomore Roy Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School), junior Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union), senior Jamie Young (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) and sophomore Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) claimed a top-10 finish and bested Maine previous relay season record. Sophomore Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) again led the women, claiming a tenth-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.54. Hahn’s time moves her from ninth in the performance list to top-five in the event. In the 200 fly, senior Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) claimed 15th place in 2:10.92 and earns a spot in the top-15 in the conference standings. Fisher also swam the second leg of the 400 free relay that placed 12th in 3:38.80, bettering its previous season record of 3:40.04. The Black Bears next compete on Saturday, December 12 when they host Bates College.
UMBC – The Retrievers men’s squad captured its fourth-straight George Mason Patriot Invitational title while the women claimed their second on Sunday. Seniors Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and Sam Maccherola again turned in top performances for the women. Both swam a leg of the 400 medley relay, helping the team touch first with a time of 3:49.61. This time puts the relay team in first in the conference standings, besting the season record by five seconds. Kaplanova claimed individual titles in the 200 breast, finishing with a time of 2:19.10, and the 200 IM, which she won with a time of 2:04.92. Kaplanova already holds the top spot in the 200 IM and second in the 200 breast, but both her times better her previous season records. Maccherola captured victories in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.53 and the 200 free with a time of 1:49.49. Maccherola set a meet record with her time in the 200 free and bests her season record by almost two seconds. With her time in the 500 free, Maccherola tops the performance list, besting the top conference season time by almost four seconds. Senior Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also claimed titles for the Retriever women. Esposito led a sweep of the 200 fly, finishing in 2:02.06, a time that moves Esposito into second in the conference standings. Godwin claimed victory in the 1,650 free, winning the event in 17:08.13. Junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) led the men, capturing the Retrievers sole title. Jones won the 200 free with a time of 1:41.12. Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) then posted a second-place finish in the 100 breast, finishing in 57.14. Sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) also posted a second-place finish in the 200 back in 1:49.78. Saad’s time puts him in first in the America East performance list. Sophomore Mark Garbowski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) claimed third in the 500 free in 4:39.38, a time which tops the previous conference season record by over three seconds. In the 50 free with a time of 21.17, sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) claimed third and ties with Jones for second in the conference standings. Sophomore Ben Wolbert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and junior Phil Novotny (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) also picked up third-place finishes in the 100 fly with a time of 50.84 and the 200 breast in 2:07.59, respectively. Novotny’s time moves him to second in the performance list. The 400 medley relay team also turned in a top finish, claiming second in 3:24.19. The time puts the UMBC relay squad atop the conference standings. On the boards for the men, freshman Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass/Chelmsford) captured fourth in the one-meter with a score of 253.90. UMBC next competes at home on January 9.
New Hampshire – The Wildcats swam to sixth place at the Terrier Invitational led by juniors Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) and Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique), who both captured individual second-place finishes. Nahin claimed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.93, which earns her the second spot in the conference standings. On day two, Perrault posted her second-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 56.35. Although Perrault placed second at the meet, her time was good enough to move her into the top spot in the performance list. Sophomore Jessica Little (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie Central Collegiate Institute) also captured a top-three finish for the Wildcats, placing third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.88. Little’s time moves her from eighth to second in the conference standings, less than two seconds out of first. Freshman Mallory Morrell (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta Senior High) was also a top swimmer for New Hampshire, finishing fifth in the 50 free with a time of 23.48. In the 50 free conference standings, Morrell now holds the third spot. The Wildcats also turned in top-five relay finishes, placing third in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.57, fifth in the 400 medley relay in 3:54.55 and fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:32.36. New Hampshire claims second in the conference standings for the 200 medley and the 400 medley relays. The Wildcats next compete on December 6 against conference rival Vermont.
Stony Brook – The Seawolves compete at Boston University on December 5.
Vermont – On December 5, the Catamounts take on Yale.
