Topping the Performance Lists Earns a Retriever and Three Terriers Weekly Swimming and Diving Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) posted top conference times and led the Retrievers to wins over Maryland and Towson on Saturday, capturing this week’s male Swimmer of the Week award. Boston U. junior Kirsten Tullis (Glenn Mills, Pa./Archmere Academy) and freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium)  led their Terrier squad to victory on Saturday and earn the female Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades while teammate junior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla)  garners the male Diver of the Week honor for the week ending November 15.

Competing in the 200 breast for only the second time in his career, Mattingly not only won the event, but posted a UMBC season-best time of 2:07.95. The time ranks Mattingly at second in the America East performance list. Mattingly also captured wins in the 100 breast and the 200 IM, remaining in second-place in the 100 breast conference standings, but moving to first in the 200 IM, beating the top conference time by two seconds. Mattingly also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that won with a time of 1:34.18. This is Mattingly’s second weekly honor of the 2009 season.

Tullis posted two individual wins and one relay victory to help the Terriers defeat Central Connecticut State. Tullis swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that touched first in a time of 1:47.08. She then won the 100 free with a time of 51.84, placing her in second in the conference standings. In the 100 breast, Tullis won with a time of 1:05.09. Although the time was exhibitioned, the time puts Tullis in second in the America East standings.

Sweeping the diving events for a fifth-straight week, Matyas earns her fifth-straight weekly honor. Matyas led a Terrier sweep of both boards, winning the one-meter with a score of 245.20 and the three-meter with a score of 254.15. Matyas continues to top the conference standings in both events.

Knorr placed third in both diving events, competing against a strong Texas A&M diving squad. Knorr placed third on the one-meter with a score of 271.10 and third on the three-meter with a score of 259.75.

Binghamton – On Saturday, the Bearcat squads defeated Drexel with the men claiming their first win of the season while the women captured their second. Junior Jason Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and sophomore Nolan Slesnick (Austin, Texas/LBJ-LASA) each posted a pair of wins to lead the men over the Dragons. Chen won both the 100 fly and the 100 back in 52.27 and 53.51, respectively. In both events, Chen ranks at sixth in the America East standings. Slesnick captured his two titles in the 500 free in 4:47.79 and the 400 IM in 4:14.12. In the 500 free, Slesnick maintains his fourth-place conference ranking, but takes over the top spot in the 400 IM. On the boards, sophomore Nick Turner (Pelham Manor, N.Y./Fordham Prep) won the men’s three-meter dive with a score of 268.80 and placed second on the one-meter with a score of 219.23. Junior Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and freshman Tin Wai Siu (Hong Kong, China/S.T.F.A Leung Kau Kui College) led the women to a 182-118 win over the Dragons. Ciccone won the 200 breast in a career-best time of 2:28.60. Ciccone’s time in the event also puts her in the top-10 in the conference standings. Touching first in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.28, Ciccone enters the top-five in the America East performance list. Siu also claimed two titles placing first in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 57.44 and 2:05.69, respectively.  Siu’s time in the 100 fly put her at fourth in the America East standings while she maintains second in the 200 fly. Junior Danielle Gallo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), senior Allyce Brand (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), sophomore Kylie Cremer (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) and freshmen Melissa Lindahl (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and Caitlin Nelson (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) also claimed titles on Saturday, winning the 100 breast, 50 free, 400 IM, 200 back and 100 free, respectively. The Binghamton women host Canisius before both squads travel to face Siena and Marist.

Boston U. – The Terrier women defeated Central Connecticut State on Saturday while the men fell to Texas A&M. The women went 1-2-3 in five events with sophomore Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) again showing up strong for Boston U., claiming two individual titles. Schmitz led a sweep of the 400 IM for her first win of the day. Schmitz touched first in the event with a time of 4:27.94, a time that puts her atop the America East performance list. Schmitz claimed her second title in the 100 fly, which the Terriers also swept. Senior Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte) also posted two wins for the Terriers, swimming the second leg of the 200 medley relay which touched first in 1:47.08. Munday claimed her sole individual title of the meet in the 100 back with a time of 57.32, which puts her atop the conference standings. Melinda Matyas continued her winning streak on the boards, leading sweeps of both the one and three-meter dives. Matyas claimed the three-meter with a score of 254.15 and the one-meter with a score of 245.20. Senior Ben Kaiser (Barrington, R.I./Barrington), sophomore Jackson Hill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and junior Bryon Kallert (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) all posted individual wins for the Terrier men. Kaiser claimed Boston U.’s first win of the day, touching first in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:48.91. Kaiser’s time in the event puts him at third in the conference standings. Hill captured his lone win of the day in the 100 free in 46.12, a time that tops his season-best. Kallert won the 100 back with a time of 51.72, moving him to second in the performance list. On the men’s boards, Tanner Knorr placed third on both the one and three-meter. Boston U. next hosts the Terrier Invitational at Competition Pool.

Maine – The Black Bear men lost to Keene State while the Maine women split their dual meet on Saturday defeating Keene State, but falling to Vermont. Sophomore Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) again led the Black Bear women, finishing first in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.61. Hahn was the sole Maine swimmer to post a win, but senior Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) also turned in some top-three finishes. McLean placed second in the 100 breast in 1:09.36 and second in the 200 breast in 2:31.77. Senior Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was again dominant on the boards for Maine, sweeping the diving events. Graham won the one-meter with a score of 213.83 and the three-meter with a score of 218.55. With those scores, Graham claims fifth in the one-meter standings and third in the three-meter. Freshman Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), and sophomores Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Roy Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin) picked up wins for the men. Chornobil won the 1,000 free in 10:01.33, placing in the top-10 of the conference’s performance list. Chornobil claimed another top-three finish at the meet in the 500 free, finishing second in 4:55.16. Mackeil claimed the 200 fly title with a time of 2:03.02 and placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 54.18. Warren capture a victory for the men in the 100 free in 49.69 and claimed another second-place finish for the Black Bears in the 50 free with a time of 22.46.

UMBC – The Retriever’s men’s squad posted wins over Maryland and Towson on Saturday while the women fell to both the Terps and the Tigers. Matt Mattingly led the men, capturing three individual victories and one relay win. Mattingly won the 100 breast, 200 breast and the 200 IM with times of 57.73, 2:07.95, and 1:52.71, respectively. In all three events, Mattingly posted season-best times. Mattingly remains at second in the 100 breast conference standings, improving on his previous time. In the 200 breast, Mattingly takes over the second spot in the America East performance list and he tops the 200 IM beating the previous top time by two seconds. With senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Mattingly finished first in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:34.18. The Retrievers also won the 400 free relay. Junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) swam a leg of the 400 free relay and also took first in two individual events, winning the 200 free in 1:42.18 and the 100 free in 46.41. Jones’ two times place him at the top of each events’ standings, first in the 200 free and second in the 100 free. On the women’s side, seniors Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho), and Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) posted season-best marks. Kaplanova finished third in the 200 breast and the 200 IM in times of 2:23.11 and 2:09.14, respectively. Kaplanova’s time in the 200 IM puts her atop the conference performance list. Maccherole claimed second in the 200 free in 1:51.41, ranking her first in the standings. Godwin also captured a second-place finish in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:19.46. Godwin’s time tops the conference season best by almost four seconds. The Retrievers next participate in the George Mason Patriot Invitational.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats return to action on Friday, November 20 at the Boston U. Invitational.

Stony Brook – The Seawolves were defeated on Wednesday by Fordham. Freshmen Ivan Kopas (Kikinda, Serbia/Technical School Kikinda) and Jane Kim (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Bronx High School of Science) led their squads with Kopas posting two individual wins while Kim captured one. Kopas won the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.78 and then touched first in the 200 back, finishing five seconds ahead of the runner up. Kopas’ time in the IM puts him in the top-five in the conference standings while his time of 1:50.53 in the 200 back tops the performance list. Junior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland/Kosciuszko Memorial), who placed second in the 200 IM, also captured a win for the Seawolves men, touching first in the 500 free with a time of 4:49.37, good enough for top-10 in the conference standings. Kim led a sweep of the 200 breast, touching first in 2:28.05. Kim’s time ranks her in the top-10 in the America East performance list. Both Seawolves squads also swept the 400 free relay. On the women’s side, freshmen Renee Rosenkranz (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia/St. Joseph), junior Maja Gudelj (Split, Croatia/General Secondary) and senior Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) led the sweep, winning the event with a time of 3:44.76. Sophomores Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and Connor Murray (Hyde Park, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and juniors Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y./Binghamton) and Sean Clarke (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) led the sweep for the men, placing first with a time of 3:21.71. Stony Brook returns to action on December 5 when the Seawolves take on conference rival Boston U.

Vermont – At Maine on Saturday, the Catamounts posted two wins, defeating the host Black Bears and Keene State. Sophomore Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led Vermont, posting two wins for the team. Dowd swept the 100 and 200 breast, finishing in times of 1:09.23 and 2:29.81, respectively. In the 100 breast, Dowd is within the top-10 in the conference standings. The Catamounts also dominated the free events with freshman Abby Mundt (Madison, Wisc./West) leading a sweep of the 100 free. Mundt won the event with a time of 54.87. Sophomore Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase), who finished third in the 100 free, placed first in the 50 free with a time of 25.11, good enough for 15th in the standings. Senior Molly MacMillian (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), sophomore Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) also captured wins in the free events, earning titles in the 200, 500 and 1,000 free. Sophomore Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) also captured a title for Vermont, finishing first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:11.02. Pittman’s time places her in the top-15 in the America East performance list. Vermont next faces Yale on December 5.
