CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Both Boston University and Binghamton needed more than 90 minutes, but for the fifth time in the last six years the top two teams will meet for the America East Women's Soccer title.
The top-seeded Terriers overcame a 1-0 deficit to down No. 2 Stony Brook 2-1 in overtime, while No. 2 Binghamton played No. 3 Maine to a scoreless tie through 110 minutes, but advanced to the championship game for the first time since 2004 on penalty kicks.
Boston U. (13-5-2), which is in search of its third straight America East title, controlled most of its game, but it was Stony Brook (7-10-2) who scored first on a goal by Sa'sha Kershaw 14:51 into the contest. The Terriers, who peppered Seawolf keeper Marisa Viola with 26 shots, did not break through until freshman Jessica Morrow tapped in a loose ball off a header from senior Emily Pallotta with just 17:26 remaining in regulation. The America East Midfielder of the Year, Pallotta then sent her team to the finals 7:36 into overtime off a pass from senior Farrell McClernon.
Binghamton (9-6-2) held a 14-8 edge in shots over Maine (9-5-3) but neither team could find the back of the net as Maine's Meagan Price-Leibenzeder recorded seven saves and Binghamton's tandem of Jen McEachron and Erin Iman combined for a pair of stops. In the shootout, both teams made their first attempt before McEachron stopped America East Striker of the Year Laura Martel's shot. The stop was all the Bearcats needed as they made their next three shots to win the shootout, 4-2.
The Terriers and Bearcats will meet for the championship on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Nickerson Field in Boston with an NCAA tournament bid on the line. Free live video streaming will be available at the new AmericaEast.tv.
