Two Goal Games Earn Pallotta, Laderoute & Herbst Women's Soccer Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Boston University and University of Vermont, two of three America East women's soccer teams that are still unbeaten through three league games have garnered weekly honors as a result. The Terriers' Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass./Andover) and the Catamounts' Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) are Co-Players of the Week, while UVM's Jess Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroede) is the Rookie of the Week.

Pallotta, a senior forward, scored twice, including the game-winner, in the Terriers’ 4-2 win at Maine Sunday. The victory was Boston U.’s fifth straight and extended their unbeaten streak against league opponents to 18. Pallotta, who ranks among league leaders with three scores, now has 14 career tallies.

Laderoute tallied a career-high six points to lead Vermont to its first win of the season Sunday. The senior forward found the back of the net twice and also added a pair of assists. She now has nine points, best on the Catamounts, who are one of three teams still unbeaten in America East play at 1-0-2.

Herbst, a freshman midfielder/forward, scored her first two career goals in the Catamounts’ 6-5 win at UMBC Sunday. She scored in the 25th and 67th minutes, with the second tally proving to be the difference.  That goal also gave UVM six goals in a game for the first time in nearly 11 years when it downed Northeastern, 8-1, on Oct. 13, 1998.

Team Notebooks:

Albany (5-6-1, 0-1-1 America East), which has already matched its highest win total since upgrading to Division I status in 1999, fell to Binghamton by a 2-1 decision in its only match last week … All six of the Great Danes’ losses have been by a single goal … UAlbany’s 2-0 win over Iona is still the team’s only match decided by multiple goals this season … Chelsea DeVerna (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) leads the team and all America East freshmen in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points … Ashley Tirabassi (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) has a school-record 40 career points on 16 goals and eight assists … She enters this week’s action needing one more tally to set the program’s all-time standard for career goals … Breanna Maggio (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) ranks first among freshmen and second overall in the league with an 0.89 goals against average and an .844 save percentage … UAlbany is the only America East team to have two goalkeepers post a shutout … In addition to Maggio’s three clean sheets, which matches a league best, Cate Crenson (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) blanked Iona in the team’s home opener … The Great Danes’ young defense has allowed just 1.17 goals per game … The program’s Division I standard of allowing 2.00 goals per game was set in 2007 … UAlbany returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 8 when it travels to face New Hampshire at 3 p.m. … The squad will also host Boston University on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. on Homecoming Weekend.

Binghamton (4-5-1, 1-2 America East) split a pair of games during the week, defeating Albany 2-1 before losing to Stony Brook 2-1… Against the Great Danes, Binghamton scored twice in the game’s first 21 minutes and improved to 17-1-1 all-time against its longtime SUNY rival… Freshman Lisa Campbell (Farmingdale, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) netted the game-winner with her first collegiate goal… Sophomore defender Dani Raske (Riverdale, N.Y./Pascack) also tallied her first goal of the season… Three days later at home, the Bearcats struck first against Stony Brook but surrendered a pair of second-half goals in the defeat… Freshman midfielder Emily Pape (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), the AE Player of the Game at Albany, scored her first collegiate goal on a header in the 37th minute… Freshman midfielder Brittany Walsh (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) was selected as the AE Player of the Game against Stony Brook… Freshman forward Jamie Holliday (Apalachin, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) leads the team with three goals and seven points… Senior starting keeper Jen McEachron (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work during the week and owns a 1.00 goals against average and a 83.3 save percentage.

Boston University (7-4-2, 3-0-0 America East) extended its win streak to five games with victories over New Hampshire (1-0) and Maine (4-2) which also increased its unbeaten streak vs. America East opponents to 18 games – dating back to Oct. 25. 2007. The Terriers opened the week with a 1-0 victory over New Hampshire, as senior Farrell McClernon (West Chester, Pa./Merion Mercy) scored the game-winner off a pass from Megan McGoldrick (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial). On Sunday, BU kept the momentum in its corner as it handed Maine its first conference loss of the season with a 4-2 triumph. Senior Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass./Andover) scored two goals – including the eventual game winner – while sophomore Jessica Luscinski (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) scored one goal and added an assist. Senior Casey Brown (Natick, Mass./Natick) also got in on the scoring, while senior Taleen Dimirdjian (Riverside, Calif./Ramona), freshman Adrienne Anderson (Needham, Mass./The Rivers School) and McClernon provided assists. The Terriers’ defense held one of the nation’s leading scorers, Laura Martel, scoreless, after she had scored eight goals in nine games. Next up for the Terriers is Vermont on Thursday (Oct. 8) at Nickerson Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

Hartford (4-6-2, 0-1-1 America East) finished without a win in two games last week, but picked up one point in the conference standings … the Hawks opened the week with a 0-0 stalemate against the Stony Brook Seawolves to open up conference play on Thursday … neither team could knock in a score during the regulation periods and both teams had legitimate scoring opportunities in the second overtime period but were unsuccessful … both teams were awarded free kicks within five yards of the box, Hartford’s shot went high over the crossbar, while keeper Lauren Brodeur (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham Munson Academy) made a spectacular leaping save to protect the tie on Stony Brook’s attempt … the Hawks then closed out the week with a 2-1 home loss to New Hampshire on Sunday … neither team scored in the opening half and the Wildcats broke the deadlock with a back-to-back goals in the 65th and 70th minutes … Hartford got its only goal in the final minute of the game when Shealagh Begley (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) connected with Laura Guigli (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) for the tally ... the Hawks will play two more conference games this week, both on the road … they begin with a mid-week matchup against the Binghamton Bearcats on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and then travel to Maryland for a meeting with the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Maine (4-4-2, 1-1-1 America East) played to a double overtime tie with Vermont on Thursday afternoon, before falling to Boston University 4-2 on Sunday afternoon… Prior to the game at Vermont, the last time Maine finished in a scoreless tie was on Oct. 9, 2008 when it went to double overtime with the Hartford Hawks and finished tied 0-0… Maine allowed a season-high four goals to Boston University on Sunday… Maine got goals from Maddie HIll (Brampton, Ontario/Mayfield Secondary) and Hannah Breton (Greenville, Maine/Greenville) in the game against the Terriers .. Leading scorer Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) was held scoreless in back-to-back games for the first time this season… Maine has had eight different players notch a goal this season, one more than last year when seven different players found the back of the net… The Black Bears will play their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday night when they host Brown in a game that will be played at Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Maine… The Black Bears then return home to host Binghamton on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 12 noon… It will be the fourth straight Sunday home game for the Black Bears.

UMBC (1-9-1, 0-2-0 America East) went 1-2 last week… The Retrievers fell at home to Penn, 3-0, on Sept. 29… UMBC picked up its first victory of the season in its final non-conference match, defeating Delaware State, 4-1, on the road on Oct. 2… Sophomore midfielder Danielle Kell (Willards, Md./Parkside) tallied three points on a goal and an assist… Freshman back Aly Gazarek (Manassas, Va./Freedom/South Florida) scored the game-winner, her first career goal… Junior midfielders Elyse Bilardo (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Megan McDonald (Wyoming, Pa./Dallas) also notched the first goals of their careers… The Retrievers took a season-high 23 shots against the Hornets… UMBC fell to America East rival Vermont at home, 6-5, on Oct. 4… The five goals are the most UMBC has scored since a 5-1 win over Howard on Sept. 30, 2005… Junior midfielder Sandra Vacarino (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) scored the first two goals of the game and added an assist on the final tally to finish with five points… It was the first multi-goal game for a Retriever since Oct. 26, 2008, and the first five-point game by a Retriever since Oct. 25, 2002… Kell, junior back Christine Sadowski (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) and freshman midfielder Sarah Purdum (West Fenwick Island, Del./Indian River) also scored for UMBC… Sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah recorded 14 saves in three games… Seven different players scored for UMBC last week… After scoring just two goals through the first eight games of the season, the Retrievers have scored nine in the last two contests to give them 11 on the year, surpassing last season’s total of 10… It is the most goals UMBC has scored in two games since tallying 13 from Sept. 20-22, 2002… Kell leads the Retrievers with six points on two goals and two assists… Eight different players have scored for the Retrievers and 10 have tallied at least one point… The Retrievers play two America East contests this week, traveling to Stony Brook on Oct. 8 and hosting Hartford on Oct. 11.

New Hampshire (2-9-1, 1-2-0) went 1-1-0 last week, dropping a 1-0 decision at home to two-time defending America East champion Boston University on Oct. 1, and recording its first conference win of the season with a 2-1 road victory at Hartford on Oct. 4 … senior goalkeeper Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) posted a solid week in net for the Wildcats, as she made two goals stand up for the win at Hartford and held Boston U. scoreless through 60-plus minutes in the one-goal loss … Yost stopped six shots against the Hawks and nearly recorded her third shutout of 2009 before Hartford found the back of the net with 58 seconds remaining in the match … Yost made nine saves against the Terriers, holding them at bay until the 61st minute … Yost, who tallied a 1.00 GAA and an .867 save percentage for the week, lowered her season GAA to 1.37 and increased her save percentage to .817 … freshman Monique Lamotte (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) scored her first collegiate goal against Hartford to give UNH a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute of their match … the tally almost stood up as the game-winning goal until Hartford scored in the final minute to slice the Wildcat lead in half … sophomore Alyssa Michel (Bellingham, Wash./Mesa State College) netted the game winner against Hartford with her first Division I goal … senior Shaunna Kaplan (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) recorded her first points of the season with an assist on Michel’s tally, while freshman Kelly Spencer (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) received a secondary assist on the play for her first collegiate point … the Wildcats return to action Thursday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Albany at Lewis Fields.

Stony Brook (3-7-2, 2-0-1) tied Hartford, 0-0, in double overtime in its first game of the week on Thursday before rallying to win 2-1 at Binghamton on Sunday afternoon … senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola posted her second straight shutout at Hartford, making four saves … it was the 23rd career shutout for Viola, tying her with Cindy Bennett ’05 for the programs career shutout record … it was the sixth overtime contest of the season for the Seawolves, who set a program record with seven overtime contests in 2007 … Stony Brook stretched its unbeaten streak to three with Sunday’s victory over Binghamton … freshman Sa’sha Kershaw scored the game-tying goal in the 52nd minute … it was the second goal of the season for Kershaw, who is tied with freshman Meghan Gilley for the team lead with six points … junior Morgan Sims assisted on Kershaw’s goal and is tied with Kershaw for the team lead with two assists … it was the fifth time this season the Seawolves have rallied to tie a game after trailing in the second half … junior Dana Adamkiewicz then scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute as she corralled a loose ball off a corner kick from freshman Taryn Schoenbeck and then put it in … it was the first collegiate goal for Adamkiewicz, who recorded the first point of her career earlier this season when she assisted on junior Debbie Aller’s game-winning goal in the Seawolves 2-1 overtime win at Yale on Sept. 16th.

Vermont (1-7-3, 1-0-2) remains unbeaten in league play after picking up its first win of the season, a 6-5 victory at UMBC.  The Catamounts begin the week 1-7-3 overall.  Senior Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) tallied a career-high six points in UVM’s victory at UMBC.  She scored twice and handed out two assists.  She leads the team in scoring with nine points and scored a total of 10 during the entire 2008 season.  Freshman Jess Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) was named the America East Player of the Game for UVM against UMBC after scoring two goals, including what proved to be the game-winning goal for Vermont.  They were her first two career goals as a Catamount.  UVM’s six goals were the most by UVM since an 8-1 victory over Northeastern on Oct. 13, 1998.  Vermont also played to a 0-0 draw against Maine.  Senior goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) made five saves against the Black Bears to earn her first shutout of the year.  She also picked up two stops in the win over the Retrievers to become just the second Catamount in school history to record more than 400 career saves.
