Big Men's Soccer Wins Net Boston U. and Vermont Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Multi-goal games have earned Boston University's Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana/Univ. of Ghana)and University of Vermont's Marty Galvin (North Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) America East Co-Player of the Week, while the Terriers' Nick Prunier took home Rookie of the Week accolades for the week ending Oct. 4.

Appiah tallied seven points in a pair of games last week to help 16th-ranked Boston U. extend its unbeaten streak to five. A senior midfielder, Appiah scored a goal and added an assist in the Terriers’ 3-3 tie against No. 23 Brown on Wednesday and then scored twice in his team’s 3-0 win in their league opener versus Stony Brook Saturday. Appiah is fourth in America East in points (11), tied for fourth in goals (4) and tied for seventh in assists (3).

Galvin factored into all three Vermont goals in a 3-1 upset win over No. 19 UMBC on Saturday. The win for the Catamounts was their first of the season and snapped the Retrievers’ nine-game win streak. A senior forward, Galvin assisted on the first tally of the contest, then found the back of the net for the first and second times this season to seal the victory. He now has five goals in 55 career games.

Prunier scored his first career goal in Boston U.'s win against Stony Brook on Saturday. The freshman forward collected a service pass from Michael Bustamente in the box and beat Stony Brook’s keeper with just under three minutes left till halftime. Prunier also made an impact in the Terriers’ 3-3 tie with Brown Wednesday, registering a team-high four shots in just 22 minutes of action.

Team Notebooks:

Albany (0-8-2, 0-1-0 America East) is still in search of its first win this season after dropping a pair of contests by identical 1-0 scores to Holy Cross and Hartford last week … Goalkeeper Adrian Foncette (Arima, Trinidad/Fatima) made three saves against the Crusaders and 10 stops against the Hawks … His performance against Hartford marked the third time he recorded double-digit saves in a single match this fall … The sophomore, who leads the league with 7.2 saves per game, has an .818 save percentage and a 1.51 goals against average  … After ranking fifth in the nation and first in the conference in scoring in 2008, UAlbany is only averaging 0.40 goals per game this year … The team is trying to break out of a scoreless drought which is approaching 500 minutes … It is the longest such streak in the program’s Division I era … Bo Jelovac (Belgrade, Serbia/Sveti Sava School) leads the Great Danes in scoring with two goals and one assist for five points … Ian Peach (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) and David Hawksworth (Sheffield, England/All Saints Catholic) have also scored goals … UAlbany continues America East play at Binghamton on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. … The Bearcats were the only America East school to defeat the Great Danes last year, and most notably ended UAlbany’s season with a 1-0 double-overtime win in the semifinal round of the league tournament at Varsity Field.

Binghamton (5-4-1, 0-0-0 America East) drew a facility record crowd of 2,604 fans to its Homecoming game against Rhode Island on Saturday night. It marks the second sellout in the three-year history of the Bearcats Sports Complex as well as the fourth time that the men’s soccer team has drawn over 2,000 fans. In four home games this season, the Bearcats have averaged a conference-best 1,650 fans per game...since moving into the Bearcats Sports Complex in 2007, Binghamton has gone 16-1-2 overall, including 14-0-2 during the regular season. The Bearcats have averaged 1,303 fans per game during that span ... senior back Kyle Kucharski (Maine, N.Y./Maine Endwell) had an assist in the game against Rhode Island on Saturday, in the last four games, Kucharski has recorded two goals and an assist ... the Bearcats had four freshman in the starting lineup against the Rams. One of those rookies, Jake Keegan (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) scored the Binghamton goal ... the Bearcats head into America Ea!st play having gone 3-1-1 over their last five games.

Boston University (7-2-2, 1-0-0 America East) extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-1 tie at No. 23  Brown and 3-0 home victory against Stony Brook in the America East opener … Senior Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana/University of Ghana) was the offensive sparkplug, recording a goal and assist against the Bears followed by a two-goal performance against the Seawolves … He is now second on the team in both points (11) and goals (4) … Sophomore back Colin Henry (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and freshman forward Nick Prunier (Worcester, Mass./Douglas) both recorded their first career goals on the week with Henry scoring one against Brown and Prunier posting one against SBU … A previous America East Player of the Week, junior Aaron O’Neal (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) improved his point total to 17 with an assist on Appiah’s second goal against the Seawolves … Sophomore Michael Bustamante (Chelsea, Mass./Chelsea) has seven assists on the year after recording two in the win over SBU … Defense held the Seawolves to zero shots on goal, as goalie Hrafn Davidsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/University of Iceland) and Trevor McManamon (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) combined for the team’s sixth shutout of the season … Terriers next host New Hampshire on Wedesday (Oct. 7), at 7 p.m. and then visit Hartford on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m.

Hartford (4-5-1, 1-0-0 America East) went 1-1 last week … Hartford closed out conference play with a 3-0 loss at in-state rival Central Connecticut State on Wednesday … The loss was the Hawks’ fourth-straight … Central Connecticut notched two-straight goals in the opening minutes of the game and put the game out of Hartford’s reach with an insurance tally in the 78th minute … The Blue Devils netted the first score with just 47 ticks off the game clock and followed up with the second goal in the 14th minute …Hartford outshot Central Connecticut by a margin of 20-15 and held a dominating 7-0 advantage in corner kicks … Senior Carlos Villa (Las Conchas, Guatemala/Arrayanes/San Jacinto) led the Hawks’ front line with seven shots, two of which were on target … Luke Citriniti (Niskayuna, N.Y/Niskayuna) made his first appearance in goal this season, facing six shots and stopping three … At Albany on Saturday, the Hawks’ snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Great Danes … Sophomore Patrick Boucher (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) netted his first goal of the season to lead the Hawks … Boucher notched the lone goal of the match mid-way through the first half … Senior Ivan Guarin (Periera, Colombia/White Plains/Boston College) ignited Hartford’s offense as he fired 6 shots at Albany keeper Adrian Foncette … Guarin’s shot deflected off Foncette, and Boucher tracked down the rebound, sneaking it past the Albany keeper at 23:23 to put the visitors at an early 1-0 advantage … Nenad Cudic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Fourth Grammar School/Auburn University at Montgomery) stopped the only two shots he faced to earn his third shutout of 2009 …The Hawks outshot the Great Danes by a 23-11 margin and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks … Through 10 games, Hartford has outshot its opponents 169-113 this season  … After three-straight games on the road, the Hawks return to the friendly confines of Al-Marzook Field for the first time in over two weeks … Hartford will host Vermont on Wednesday, October 7 followed by Boston University on Saturday, October 10.

UMBC’s (9-1-0, 0-1-0 America East) nine-game winning streak was halted in the America East Conference opener, as the Retrievers fell, 3-1, at Vermont on Saturday… The Retrievers are ranked No. 23 in this week’s College Soccer News’ poll… Sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh), the nation’s leading scorer, did keep his scoring streak alive at 10, as he tallied his 13th goal of the campaign in the 31st minute… Bulls has scored in all ten games to date and his 13 goals are the most in a single season for UMBC since Derek McElligott amassed 15 goals in 2003… Bulls is one shy of UMBC’s all-time Division I record for points in consecutive games, held by Giuliano Celenza, who scored in 11 straight in the 2000 campaign… Freshman netminder Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made three saves in the game and allowed multiple goals for the first time in his ten-game tenure… The Catamounts’ score in the 12th minute was UMBC’s first goal allowed in 447 minutes…  Vermont is now 3-0-2 vs. UMBC in the last five meetings and holds a 3-2-2 series advantage… UMBC is 0-8-2 in its last ten America East road games, with its last win occurring at Maine in 2006… The Retrievers play two of their three America East home games in a four-day span this week, hosting Stony Brook on Wednesday evening and UNH on Saturday afternoon… The Seawolves have won four of the last five meetings vs. UMBC and hold a 4-3 lead overall… UMBC did win the last time in Baltimore, 4-0, in 2007 and are 3-1 vs. SBU at home.

New Hampshire (3-5-1, 0-0-0 America East) scored a goal in the 82nd minute of play, but it was not enough, as the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team fell to Fairfield University, 2-1, at Lessing Field on Wednesday night … The goal was tallied by freshman Charlie Roche (Haverhill, Mass.) and marked the first score of his collegiate career… Brad Hilton (Merrimack, N.H.) was credited with the assist on the play … He now has a team best two assists, both of which have come in the last two games … The Wildcats outshot the Stags 10 to eight, including a second half in which they compiled four shots, while the Stags totaled two … Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass./ Westborough) led the Wildcats in shots, tallying five for the second straight game. … Marcus Barr (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) notched two shots of his own, while Alex Russell (Harisburg, Pa/ Central Dauphin East), Hilton and Roche each tallied one shot apiece … Colin O’Connell (Springfield, Mass./ Minnechaug Regional) compiled five saves in the game, he now has 22 on the season, paired with two shutouts and a goals against average of 0.91 … The Wildcats return to action when they travel to Boston, Mass. to open up conference play against the Boston University Terriers, Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.

Stony Brook (1-8-2, 0-1-0 America East) lost its only game played last week… Despite falling to #15 Boston University, 3-0, redshirt freshman keeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.) shut out the Terriers in the second half… The Seawolves only managed to record four shots on the evening… Stony Brook faces its second consecutive ranked opponent on Wednesday, taking on #19 UMBC in Baltimore at 7 pm.

Vermont (1-6-3, 1-0-0 America East) traveled to Hanover, N.H., where they fell 3-1 to Dartmouth on Wednesday … Junior Rem Kielman recorded the lone goal for UVM … Vermont then opened America East play at home against No. 19 UMBC … The Catamounts defeated the undefeated Retrievers 3-1 … Despite having only four seniors on the roster, three of them had a hand in the goals … Senior Marty Galvin recorded two goals and an assist, Matt Hennessey notched the first goal of the game and T.J. Gore recorded an assist … It was the first game the Catamounts scored more than one goal.
