Boston U. Sweeps Swimming and Diving Awards After Defeating Maine

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After leading their teams to sweeps of Maine on Saturday, Boston University’s junior Bryan Kallert (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and freshman Lauren Drake (Wuerzburg, Germany/Heidelberg) capture the Swimmer of the Week awards while their teammates junior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla) and freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) garner the Diver of the Week honors for the week ending October 25.

Kallert claimed two individual titles and one second-place relay finish against Maine. In the 200 fly, Kallert led the Terrier men in a sweep of the event, touching first in 1:56.92. He claimed his second victory in the 100 free with a time of 46.98. Swimming the third leg of the 200-medley relay, Kallert also earned a second-place finish.

To start her second meet of the season, Drake anchored the 200-medley relay team that claimed first in 1:45.37. Drake then led Boston U.’s sweep of the 50 free, finishing in 24.20. She also captured the 500 free title and touched first in the 200 IM in 2:10.92, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Knorr captures his second diving honor of the season after posting two top diving scores against Maine. With a score of 283.35, Knorr claimed the top spot in the one-meter board. Knorr also won the three-meter dive, earning a score of 313.28.

Earning the second-straight diving award of her collegiate career, Matyas swept the diving events for the second-straight week. Matyas won the one-meter with a score of 284.33. She also topped the competition in the three-meter, posting a score of 295.95.

Binghamton – The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, October 31 when they race against Boston U. and Vermont.

Boston U. – Both Terrier squads captured wins over Maine on Saturday, October 24. The Terrier men swept the 200 free, 200 fly, 200 breast, 100 back and 50 free. Junior Mark Nakanishi (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) led the sweep of the 200 free while Bryon Kallert led the sweep of the 200 fly. In the 200 breast, senior Tyson Selesnick (Austin, Texas/Rutgers), who also claimed second in the 200 fly, touched first followed by junior Peter Lo (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto Senior) and senior Arik Seiler (Portland, Maine/Deering). Seiler also led the Terrier’s sweep of the 50 free. Sophomore Jason Hill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) captured first in the Terrier’s sweep of the 100 back with a time of 56.83. The Boston U. men also went one-two in the 200 medley relay, 100 and 1,000 free. Tanner Knorr claimed both the one and three-meter diving titles for the men. The women swept two events with Lauren Drake, who was also a member of the first place 200 medley relay, leading the 50 free sweep while relay teammate senior Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte) led the sweep of the 100 free. The Boston U. women claimed six other individual titles with junior Clara Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) capturing two, one in the 1,000 free and the other in the 200 breast. The Terriers also went one-two-three on the one-meter board with Melinda Matyas leading the sweep. Boston U. next competes against Binghamton and Vermont on October 31.

Maine – The Black Bears men’s and women’s teams fell at Boston U. on Saturday 167-92 and 169-117, respectively. Both the Maine squads captured a win in the 400 free relay. Freshman Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden), sophomore Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth High School), and juniors Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H./Contoocook Valley) and Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) captured the win for the women with a time of 3:46.51 while sophomores Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine/Brewer High School), Roy Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) and Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and junior Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) won the men’s event in 3:20.55. Landry also touched first for the men in the 100 breast. The men claimed two other individual titles with sophomore Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich High School ) taking first in the 200 IM while sophomore Drew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford High School) captured the 100 fly. Senior Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) picked up two top finishes for the women, placing first in the 100 fly and second in the 200 fly. Freshman Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) won the 200 IM for Maine, touching first in a time of 2:17.21. Senior Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) won the three-meter diving event and took fourth in the one-meter. The Black Bears next race at home against Rhode Island on October 31.

Maine's story

UMBC – The Retrievers fall to 1-1 on the season after both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Navy on Saturday. Three seniors captured wins for the UMBC women. Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) took the 100 breast in 1:05.47, Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) touched first in the 200 fly in 2:06.47 and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) claimed the 200 IM in 2:11.34. The men also won three individual events with senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) placing first in the 100 breast in 58:58, junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) claiming the 100 free in 47:38 and sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) winning the 200 back in 1:52.33. The men also picked up a win in the 200 medley relay where freshman Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Mattingly claimed first with a time of 1:35.17. UMBC returns to action on November 14 when they take on Maryland and Towson.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats return to action on November 7 against Central Connecticut State after starting their season 3-0.

Stony Brook – The Seawolves’ women’s diving squad competed this past weekend against Fairfield in a diving-only meet. Stony Brook captured both the one and three-meter diving titles. Sophomore Shanna Murphy (Chester, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) won the one-meter board and captured second in the three-meter while junior Megan Furrer (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) claimed the three-meter diving title but placed second behind Murphy in the one-meter. Freshman Jenna Redka (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), in her first meet as a Seawolf, placed fourth in the one-meter dive and fifth in the three meter. Classmate Patricia O’Connell (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) placed sixth in the one-meter board and fourth in the three-meter in her first competition for Stony Brook. The Seawolves’ swimming and diving teams next compete on October 31 at Massachusetts.

Vermont – In their home opener, the Catamounts improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season after defeating Siena. Junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) led Vermont, claiming three titles on Saturday. Weaver took first in the 100 and 200 free and the 100 fly with times of 54.22, 1:54.08 and 59.57, respectively. Senior Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) also captured two wins, placing first in the 50 and 500 free in 25.00 and 5:05.95, respectively. Weaver and Clark also participated in the 400 free relay team, which also included freshman Abby Mundt (Madison, Wis./West) and sophomore Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase), that set a new pool record of 3:37.07. Four other Catamounts captured first-place finishes with freshman Karole-Ann Bayer (Richmond, Va./Saint Gertrude) and sophomore Jordan Schweizer (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) picking up their first collegiate wins in the 200 back and 200 breast, respectively. Sophomores Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) also earned victories for Vermont with Pittman touching first in the 200 fly and Heenan winning the 1,000 free. Sophomore Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass./Andover) won the one-meter diving title for the Catamounts. Vermont next travels to Vestal, N.Y. where the teams will face Binghamton and Boston U. on Saturday.
