CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- By virtue of its 2-0 victory at Boston U. on Saturday evening, Albany has clinched its second straight regular season field hockey championship and will host the 2009 America East Field Hockey Championship as the number one seed.
The 18th-ranked Great Danes moved to 4-0 in America East play with the win over the Terriers in a contest between a pair of 3-0 teams. Boston U. drops to 3-1 and will not know its seed for the four-team conference tournament until the final weekend of play.
Next weekend, the Terriers will play University of Maine, who earlier Saturday clinched a berth into the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Vermont. The winner of next week's match will earn the two seed for the tournament.
University of New Hampshire, the preseason favorite of the head coaches, also punched its ticket into the tournament after defeating Fairfield University, 6-0, on Saturday. The Wildcats, who are locked in as the four seed with a 2-2 record, will face Albany next weekend.
The 2009 America East Field Hockey Championship will be held on Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7. Host Albany will be in search of its second straight crown, winning the program's first-ever America East crown last season on its on turf. All four teams competing in this year's tournament are receiving votes in the latest NFHCA National Division I Poll.
