CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC senior swimmers Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) led their squads to wins over Rider on Saturday and earn this week’s male and female Swimmer of the Week awards, respectively.  Boston University divers junior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla) and freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) garner the male and female Diver of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending October 18.

Mattingly led UMBC to a win over Rider on Saturday, posting two individual wins and one relay victory. A silver medalist in the 200 IM at the 2009 America East Championship, Mattingly won the event at Rider, posting a time of 1:57.38. Mattingly also touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 medley relay, posting times of 58.67 and 1:35.80, respectively.

Posting two wins and two second-place finishes, Kaplanova helped lead the UMBC women’s squad over Rider. At last year’s conference championship, Kaplanova claimed bronze in the 200 breast, but on Saturday she touched first in a time of 2:26.77. She also won the 200 IM in 2:12.34. Kaplanova’s two second-place finishes came in the 100 back and the 200 medley relay.

Knorr captured two second-place finishes on the board at his first meet of the season. With a final score of 267.37, Knorr took second in the one-meter. Later he posted a score of 245 on the three-meter, which earned him another second place finish for the day.

At her first meet as a Terrier, Matyas claimed both the one and the three-meter diving titles. Matyas claimed the one-meter board with a final score of 219.52. To win the three-meter board, she posted a final score of 271.28. Matyas’ two wins helped Boston U. defeat UMass 175-118.

Binghamton – The Bearcat swimming and diving teams return to action against Boston U. and Vermont on October 31.

Boston U. – The Terriers started their season at a meet against UMass on Saturday with the Boston U. women taking home a victory while the men fell to the Minutemen in the last event. The Terrier women claimed first place in 10 events. Senior Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte) led the Terrier women breaking a pool record in the 50 free with a time of 24:34. The freshmen class had a strong showing in their first meet capturing four of the first-place finishes. Freshmen Lauren Drake (Wuerzburg, Germany/Heidelberg), Kara Zebrowski (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), and Katie Radin (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) touched first in the 200 free, 100 back and 200 back, respectively, to claim titles in their first collegiate races. Melinda Matyas won both the one and three-meter dive in her first meet as a Terrier. Boston U. took home eight first-place finishes on the men’s side. Both juniors Bryon Kallert (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) claimed multiple titles. Kallert touched first in the 100 and 200 back while Ernest won the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM. Tanner Knorr placed second on the one and three-meter board. The Terriers next hosts Maine on October 24.

Maine – The Black Bear women defeated Central Connecticut State (161-132), but fell to Northeastern (190-102) in a double-dual meet to open their season on Saturday. Senior captain Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led Maine, winning the three-meter diving event with a final score of 215.65 after placing second in the one-meter. The 400 free relay team also touched first in 3:45.71. Sophomore Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) claimed a top-three finish in her first race as a Black Bear, taking third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:14.66. The 200 medley relay team of sophomore Sara Knight (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner), Thornbrough, sophomore Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and freshman Grace Barnett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor High School) also posted a top finish for Maine capturing fourth in a time of 1:55.71. Maine next competes on October 23 at Bryant University, where the men open their 2009-10 season.

UMBC – The Retrievers men’s and women’s teams both posted victories over Rider on Saturday. The men won 163-133, led by Matt Mattingly who won the 100 breast, the 200 IM and was a part of the 200 medley relay that took first with a time of 1:35.80. Juniors Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) also claimed three first-place finishes. Jones won the 100 and 200 free and helped the 400 free relay team touch first. Reitz was a member of the 200 medley relay that won on Saturday and he also captured first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly. The women defeated Rider 165-135 led by their 400 free relay team of underclassmen, sophomores Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach), Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) and Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and freshman Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas), who touched first in a Coppola pool-record time of 3:36.94. Three Retrievers were also two-event winners. Senior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) swept the fly events while Tereza Kaplanova won the 200 breast and the 200 IM. Junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was the third two-event winner, claiming first in the 500 and 1,000 free. UMBC hosts Navy on Saturday, October 24.

New Hampshire – At the Wildcats’ season-opening tri-meet on Saturday, the women defeated Niagara, 213-85, and Siena, 191.5-102.5. New Hampshire broke six pool, four individual and two relay records, the most by one team in a single meet in the Siena Swim Center’s 11-year history. The first pool record fell in the 200 medley relay when freshman Mallory Morrell (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta Senior), junior Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead), junior Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) and Shelli Reed (Hollister, Cali./San Benito) touched first in 1:48.96. The second relay record was set by the 200 free relay team that won with a time of 1:38.47. The four individual records were set by sophomore Jessica Little (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie Central Collegiate Institute) in the 200 IM, Morrell in the 50 free, Perrault in the 100 back and Reed in the 100 free.  New Hampshire continued its pool dominance on Sunday earning its third-straight win, downing Wagner 121-77. The Wildcats captured titles in all but three events. The 200 medley relay again captured first place with senior Mattie Fowler (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) swimming in place of Reed. Junior Kristen Wollenzien (Holland Landing, Ontario/Dr. John M. Denison), junior Jess Perry (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro High School), Reed, Perrault, Morrell, and Little all claimed individual first-place finishes on Sunday.
