ST. LOUIS
- University at Albany's Steward Ceus, the reigning America East Goalkeeper of
the Year, was chosen in the third round of the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids on Thursday. The event was held as part of the NSCAA Coaches' Convention at the St. Louis Convention Center.
The 37th overall selection and third keeper taken, Ceus will join fellow UAlbany alum Bouna Coundoul, a 2005 graduate, as a member of the Rapids. Coundoul, the 2002 and 2004 America East Goalkeeper of the Year, has started 51 career games for the club over the past three seasons.
Ceus,
a senior from West Haverstraw, N.Y., led Albany to a 12-4-2 mark in 2008, which
tied the program's Division I record for wins in a season. He earned third-team All-America status after ranking
among the nation's best with 5.93 saves per game and finishing eighth in save
percentage (.856).
Ceus is the third America East player chosen in the 14 years MLS has conducted a draft. Andrew Dorman, a 2004 Boston University graduate, was picked by the New England Revolution that year, while University of Hartford alum Rob Jachym was taken third overall by the Columbus Crew in 1997. Several other standouts have been selected in the Supplemental Draft.
