CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Binghamton University’s Brenno Varanda (St.
Petersburg, Fla./Northeast High) and Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) earned
the first male Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades of 2009, respectively,
while the University of Vermont’s Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South
Burlington) earned the female Swimmer of the Week award. There were no nominees for the female Diver
of the Week award.
Varanda, a senior, earned first-place finishes in the 200IM
(1:55.93) and the 200 breast (2:08.14) against host Buffalo
on Sunday, but the Bearcats fell, 126-91.
This is Veranda’s first weekly award for the 2008-09 season.
Graham, a senior, took second place on the three-meter
diving event when the Bearcats traveled to Buffalo
this weekend. Graham’s score of 288.08
was more than 30 points ahead of the third-place finisher, but Binghamton
came up short to the Bulls, 126-91.
Weaver, a sophomore, has been selected as the America East
female Swimmer of Week for three consecutive weeks and has showed no signs of
slowing down. The Vermont
native earned three individual victories at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon as
well as a first-place finish with the 400 medley relay team. Each of Weaver’s first-place times, the 200
backstroke (2:05.89), the 200 freestyle (1:53.24) and the 200IM (2:10.16), set
Holy Cross pool records, as did her 100 backstroke leg of the relay (58.47).
Binghamton- Binghamton senior Brenno Varanda earned two
individual victories when the Bearcats traveled to Buffalo,
but it wasn’t enough as the men fell, 126-91, and the women, 140-81. Varanda
posted a time of 1:55.93 in the 200IM and followed it with an additional win in
the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.14.
Classmate Ryan Graham earned a second place finish in the three-meter
board scoring 288.08 points. For the
women, sophomore Lyndsi Worthington raced for a first place finish in the 200
backstroke, posting a time of 2:14.37. Other lead finishers for the women were Amanda
Ciccone, who placed second in the 50 free with a time of 25.45, and freshman
Tricia Alejandro, who earned third in the 200IM (2:16.84) and the 500 free
(5:20.57).
Boston- After a winter training trip to Puerto
Rico, the Terriers will travel to Northeastern to take on the
Huskies and America East rival New Hampshire
on Saturday, January 17.
Maine- The Black Bears did not compete this week and will
return to action on Saturday, January 17, when they take on Providence.
UMBC- The Retrievers will resume competition after winter
break on Saturday, January 17, when they travel to East Carolina.
New Hampshire- New Hampshire was inactive this week, but
will join America East rival Terriers at Northeastern on Saturday, January 17.
Stony Brook- The Seawolves competed at the Orange Bowl
Classic in Key Largo, Fla.
on Saturday, January 3 as part of their winter training trip. Leading the men
was freshman Ian Francis who swam for third-place finishes in the 50- and
100-meter backstrokes with times of 31.00 and 1:08.35, respectively. Classmate Deirdre Leong was the driving force
for the women, earning three Top 10 finishes on the day. The freshman earned sixth in the 50-meter
backstroke (33.68), ninth in the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.48) and was a
member of the sixth place 200-meter medley relay team.
Vermont- The Catamounts picked up a pair of victories on
Sunday against Holy Cross, 229-68, and Central
Connecticut State,
179-120, while breaking five Holy Cross pool records. Kate Weaver won three individual events as
well as one relay victory and shattered pool records in all four events. The sophomore posted records during her
first-place finishes in the 200 backstroke (2:05.89), 200 freestyle (1:53.24)
and the 200 IM (2:10.16) as well as her time of 58.47 in the 100 yard
backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay.
In Saturday’s loss to Dartmouth,
168-132, Weaver picked up an additional pair of victories in the 100 and 200
yard backstrokes with times of 58.40 and 2:07.66, respectively. Freshman Avery Pittman set the final pool
record of Sunday, posting a time of 58.79 in the 100 butterfly. The Catamounts return to action next Saturday
when they travel to face Navy at 12 p.m.
