CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Two UMBC runners have earned male and female Track Performers of the week while a pair of University at Albany athletes have garnered the first weekly male and female Field Performer accolades of 2009.
Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough), a junior at UMBC, earned four medals, including two golds, at the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, Pa. this past weekend. Brown placed first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.23 seconds and was the anchor of the first-place men’s shuttle hurdles team. Brown was also a member of the second-place 4x200-meter relay team and the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team that placed third.
Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) broke two school records for the Retrievers with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.81 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and a time of 34.38 in the women’s shuttle hurdles team. The freshman was also a part of 4x200-meter relay team that finished third and the 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth.
For the Great Danes, junior Luke Schoen (Bohemia, N.Y./West Islip) broke his own school record by clearing 17-feet-one-inch in the pole vault event at the Yale Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA Championships. Schoen broke his previous mark by over four inches and recorded the top America East mark of the season by almost two feet.
Senior Kamilah McShine (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) recorded 3,259 points in the pentathlon at the Dartmouth Relays on Friday earning her second overall in the field of 13. McShine placed first in 60-meter high hurdles as well as the long jump and the score places her at the top of America East competitors this season by almost 400 points.
Albany- The Great Danes kicked off their indoor track and field season at the Dartmouth Relays and the Yale Collegiate Invitational this past weekend where six individuals and all three men’s relay teams qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships. Junior Luke Schoen broke his own school record for the pole vault, clearing a height of 17-1 which was enough to provisionally qualify him for the NCAA Championships and earned him first place. Senior Joe Greene earned first among 62 competitors in the 400-meter dash by recording a time of 48.72 seconds and went on to run the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay team. For the women, Fey Adaramola, a junior transfer from Central Florida, finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.76 seconds. Senior Kamilah McShine placed second in the pentathlon with 3,259 points, earning first in the 60-meter high hurdles (8.93) and the long jump (16-8).
Binghamton- Binghamton did not compete this week, but will begin its 2009 campaign on Saturday, January 17 at the West Point Invitational.
Boston- The Terriers will host Boston College, Massachusetts and Sacred Heart on Thursday evening at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
Hartford- Hartford will continue to train in the coming weeks, returning to action on Friday, January 30, at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
Maine- The Black Bears joined America East rivals Vermont and Albany at the Dartmouth Relays this weekend where their field performers stole the show. Lital Pilosof, a sophomore, led the women’s team, finishing fifth in the pentathlon with 2,845 points and a third place finish in the pentathlon’s 800 meter run (2:33.91). Senior Paul Brosseau earned eighth in the men’s heptathlon, scoring 3,981 points and earning fourth in the event’s 1,000 meter run (2:56.84). Maine will return to action on Saturday at the Green and Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec.
New Hampshire- The Wildcats will compete on Saturday, January 17, when they host Holy Cross and Quinnipiac in Durham, N.H.
UMBC- The Retrievers found success this weekend at the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, Pa. where they broke four school records. Imani Colbert would break two, the first coming in the 60-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.81 seconds and the second as part of the women’s meter shuttle hurdle team that placed first with a time of 34.38. Junior Keith Brown earned two golds and four total medals for his squad, placing first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23) and running a leg of the school record breaking men’s meter shuttle hurdle team (30.54). Sophomore Victor Gilreath qualified for the IC4A Championships with a second-place mark of 14.77m in the triple jump while earning third in the high jump (1.94m).
Stony Brook- After inaction during winter break, Stony Brook will head to URI on Thursday of this week to compete in the URI Heptathlon.
Vermont- At the 40th annual Dartmouth Relays, senior Cameron Grant led the Catamount men in the track events, improving his time through each heat of the 60 meter dash and earning third overall with a time of 7.05 seconds?just one one-hundredth off the school record. Freshman Mari Fourie followed suit in the women’s 60 meter dash, bettering her time in each heat and finishing fifth in the finals with a time of 7.99. Classmate Ase Lundin led the women in the field events, placing fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.47m (37-7.75). Vermont will host McGill and Middlebury on January 23, at 4 p.m.
