CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-
Jack Kelley, a freshman at the University at Albany, and Katie Radzik, a
senior for Binghamton University, garnered this season’s first America East
cross country male and female player of the week accolades for the week ending
September 7th. In his first
collegiate performance, Kelley led the Great Danes to a first place finish out
of five teams at the Monmouth Kick-Off Classic on Saturday, September 6th,
completing the 6k course in 19:47 and securing a fourth place overall
finish. Kelley heads a powerful freshman
class that took eight of the top nine finishing spots for Albany.
Katie Radzik had a commanding start
to the season with a record breaking performance in Binghamton’s
season opener at the Baltimore Metro Cross Country Meet on Friday, September 5th. Crossing the finish line of the 5,000 meter
race in a time of 18:03, Radzik not only earned a first place overall finish,
but managed to shatter the course record by 16 seconds in the process.
Albany- The Albany
men made a strong statement on Saturday, September 6, placing first out of five
teams at the Monmouth Kick-Off Classic in Syracuse,
NY.
The freshmen class held eight of the top nine Great Dane positions, as
freshman Jack Kelley led his squad with a fourth place overall finish in his
collegiate debut with a time of 19:47 in the 6k. The Albany women, led by first-place finisher
senior Laura Cummings, managed to edge host Monmouth out of first place by a
three-point margin. Cummings held a
comfortable first place finish in the 4k with a time of 14:36?12 seconds ahead
of the competition. The Great Dane women placed four runners within the Top 10.
Albany's Story
Binghamton-
Binghamton men’s cross country secured a first place finish out of nine
teams at the Baltimore Metro Cross Country Meet on Friday at the Oregon
Ridge Park
while the women took third out of 11.
Both squads had strong leadership as junior Chris Gaube and senior Katie
Radzik each secured first place finishes.
Radzik shattered the previous record for the 5,000 meter course by 16
seconds with a time of 18:03. The men
had eight finishers represented in the Top 10 while the women claimed first,
second, third, fourth, and sixth place.
Binghamton's Story
Boston- The Terriers
will head north to Hanover N.H.
for their season opener at the Dartmouth
Invitational on Saturday, September 13.
Hartford- The Hartford Hawks traveled to Trinity
College for the Trinity College
Invitational on Saturday, September 6 for their season opener where the women
took home seventh place out of 14 teams and the men secured ninth out of
11. Sophomore Jonas Hampton was the
first to cross for the Hartford men and finished only 20 seconds behind
Trinity’s race leader giving him the 26th spot. For the women, senior Elizabeth Foster led
the Hawks with a third place finish completing the 4,000 meter course in 16:55.

Maine- The Black Bears will kick off the season at
an America East Pre-Race in Baltimore, MD,
on Saturday, September 13.
UMBC- The UMBC
Retrievers began their 2008 season at the Mount St. Mary’s Dual 5K’s in
Emmitsburg Maryland on Friday,
August 29. The men took first place out
of six teams led by sophomore Paul Zwama who crossed fourth with a time of
16:18.66 and was followed by teammates in sixth, seventh, and eighth
place. Junior Suzanne Gabriel was first
to cross for the UMBC women, clocking in a time of 19:48.38 and securing her
spot in 13th. The women ended
the day tied for sixth place out of seven teams.
UMBC's Story
UNH- The Wildcats took on
Providence College,
Boston College,
and Georgia State College at their own College Woods course on Friday, August
29, claiming second place in the men’s competition and third for the
women. The women fell just two points
shy of Boston College, and were led by sophomore Erica Jesseman who placed
fifth overall in the 4,000 meter race. Senior Scott McGrath took home a third
place finish for the men and was supported by three other teammates finishing
in the Top 10.

Stony Brook- Stony Brook cross country started its season
off right as both the men and women took home first place from the Stony Brook
Invitational on Friday, August 29.
Junior Jessica Hampson secured first place overall with a comfortable
14-second lead on teammate and second-place finisher Holly Van Dalen. Four Seawolves came in behind them, securing
the top six spots for the women.
Sophomore Tim Hodge led the men’s team across the finish line taking
first place overall with a time of 19:33.60.
Three of Hodge’s teammates would cross in the next 50 seconds, filling
the top four slots with Seawolves.
