CAMBRIDGE,
Mass.- Binghamton sophomore Erik van Ingen (Marathon,
N.Y.) and Boston
U. senior Andrea Walkonen (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) earned
Performer of the Week Honors for the week ending September 23.
Walkonen led the Terriers with a first-place overall finish
at the Ted Owen Invitational on Saturday where she blew through the 5,000-meter
race, setting a new course record with a time of 16:49. Walkonen finished a full 28 seconds ahead of
the second-place finisher, and 1:06
ahead of third.
Van Ingen ran the 8,000-meter course at the Stampede
Invitational at Beaver Island State Park in a time of 25:48.4, earning him and
his team a first-place overall finish in the race. The overall win was the second for the
Bearcats in as many meets.
Albany- The men
and women’s Great Dane cross country teams both took home second-place from the
Commodore Classic at Vanderbilt University
on Saturday. The men were led by a
valiant effort from senior Brian Yurkewecz who earned a hard fought second
place with a time of 26:23.88- just .23 seconds behind the first-place
finisher. The men would place two Great
Danes in the top 10, and would finish just eight points behind
regionally-ranked Vanderbilt. For the
women, senior Laura Cummings continued a strong season with a third-place
overall finish with a time of 18:08. The
women fell only behind the invitational host, Vanderbilt.
Albany's Story
Binghamton- The Bearcats continued a strong season on
Saturday at the UB Stampede Invitation just one week after both teams were
ranked nationally in the USTFCCCA polls.
The men, led by sophomore performer of the week Erik van Ingen, took a
first place finish out of 11 teams with van Ingen in first, followed closely by
junior Chris Gaube in second, and sophomore Adam Quinn in fourth. Senior Katie Radzik, who placed third
overall, paced the women and led them to fourth-place finish out of ten
teams.

Boston U.- The Terriers faced off against America East
rivals Hartford and New
Hampshire in the eight-team Ted Owen Invitational on
Saturday. Senior performer of the week
Andrea Walkonen set a new course record, posting a 16:49 on the 5,000-meter
course, earning her and the women’s squad a first-place finish. Walkonen was followed by four other top 10
Terrier finishers, including junior Erin Lagasse in second-place. On the men’s side, junior Eric Ashe finished
first in the meet with a 25:39 finish in the five-mile course. Two other Terriers would cross in the top 10
for the men, earning them a second-place overall finish.

Hartford- The Hawks joined the Terriers and the Wildcats at
the Ted Owen Invitational on Saturday where senior captain Elizabeth Foster led
the women, setting a personal best time and finishing the 5,000-meter course in
18:33. The team would go on to finish
fifth out of eight teams. On the men’s
side, sophomore captain Jonas Hampton led the squad with an 19th-place
overall finish in the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:13. The men took home eighth place in the eighth
team meet.
Hartford's Story
Maine- The Black Bear women took second-place out of four
teams, including conference rival Vermont,
at the University of Massachusetts
Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. The squad was led by freshmen Corey Conner
and Hilary Maxim with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively. The men, led by a seventh-place finish by
junior Miles Bartlett with a time of 26:06, also finished second overall in the
five-team race.
Maine's Story
UMBC- After a week
off, the Retrievers will return to action on October 3 when they host the
Towson Invitational.
UNH- The Wildcat men’s
team took first-place out of 10 teams, including Boston U. and Hartford, at the
CCSU Ted Owen Invitational on Saturday.
The squad was led by the powerful performances of junior Wesley Dinnan
and senior Brent Powers, who crossed in second and third, respectively, just
one second apart with times of 25:45, and 25:46. The women took home second in
the same meet when senior captain Kim Povec set the pace with a time of 17:55
in the 5,000 meter course, earning her third overall, trailed by freshman
teammate Elizabeth Campbell in fourth.

Stony Brook- The Seawolves men and women’s cross country
teams each had a runner finish in the top 10 at the 2008 Paddy Doyle Iona Meet of
Champions on Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park. Freshman Hayley Green crossed first for the
women, grabbing a third place spot with her time of 22:05.4. For the men,
junior Tim Hodge led his teammates and finished eighth with 24:59.5. The women took home a 16th place
finish out of 21 teams while the men held 12th of 26.
Stony Brook's Story
UVM- The Catamounts took home first-place for the women and
third-place for the men at the University of Massachusetts Cross Country
Invitational on Saturday. Junior Aly Millett
was the first to cross for the women’s squad with a second-place time of
18:27. Millett was supported by three
other Catamounts placing in the top 10.
Junior Doug Maisey was the first Catamount to cross for the men for the
second week in a row, finishing the race with a time of 25:53 and earning
sixth-place overall. The men took home a
third-place finish.
