Albany's Polizois Nets Gamewinner And Player of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- University at Albany senior Michele Polizois (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) earned the America East field hockey player of the week for her clutch performance against tough opponents last week. The league's rookie of the week, Maine's Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) exploded on the offensive end of the field last week and leads the Black Bears in scoring. Polizois recorded three goals in two games last week, including the gamewinner in a 3-2 victory over 16th-ranked Michigan on Friday. The senior midfielder then tallied two goals in a 4-3 double overtime loss to Kent State on Sunday. All three of her goals came on penalty corners. Polizois, who led all players with six shots on goal against Kent State, leads the conference in scoring with seven goals and one assist for 15 total points.

Newton tallied three goals and three assists on the weekend, including a hat trick and two assists for an eight-point effort against Bryant. The next day against Quinnipiac, the rookie added an assist and a team-high four shots. Newton now leads the team with 13 points. This is her second weekly award of the season.

UAlbany (5-3 overall, 0-0 America East), ranked 20th in the NFHCA Coaches’ Poll last week, faced off against #16 Michigan on Friday before hosting Kent State at Alumni Turf Field on Sunday... The Great Danes defeated the Wolverines, 3-2, before falling to the Golden Flashes, 4-3, in double overtime... Senior midfielder Michele Polizois (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) scored three goals on the week, including the gamewinner against Michigan... Lindsey is now tied for first on UAlbany’s career assists chart with 33... Senior goalkeeper Ashley Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) played complete games in the cage for UAlbany in the two games over the weekend, making six saves in both contests... Ross boasts a .782 save percentage and a 1.79 goals against average on the season... The Great Danes will host Colgate in a midweek game on Wednesday evening before visiting Massachusetts on Saturday... UAlbany will close out the week with a 2 p.m. game against Princeton at Alumni Turf Field on Sunday. 

Boston University (3-5, 0-0) had its first three-game week of the season, posting a 1-0 victory over Central Michigan and falling to a pair of ranked opponents in No. 6 Iowa and No. 12 Boston College... In the win over the Chippewas, senior Sheena Berry (Edinburgh, Scotland/Univ. of Edinburgh) recorded her first goal as a Terrier in the early stages of the second half and added a pair of defensive saves to preserve the shutout ... On Wednesday, Boston U. had answers to two early BC goals but came out on the short end of a 4-2 contest... Junior Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Virginia Commonwealth) scored a goal and freshman Kate Murphy (Millbury, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) recorded her first collegiate tally, while junior Gabby Hajjar (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) earned a pair of assists... Sophomore Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), who made two saves to earn the shutout against Central Michigan, made a career-best 13 saves versus Iowa on Sunday, but the Hawkeyes came away with a 5-1 victory to avenge last year’s double-overtime victory by the Terriers in the NCAA First Round... Senior Hayly Ross (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) scored Boston U.'s lone goal, which was assisted by sophomore Maryette Stuart (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), who added two defensive saves on the week... Eight different players have scored the Terriers' 10 goals this season... Boston U. will welcome perennial power Old Dominion to Jack Barry Field on Saturday (Sept. 27) before hosting Virginia the following day at BC's Newton Campus Field.

The Stags (2-6, 0-0) stopped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Siena College over the weekend. Emily Janis scored two goals in the game to lift Fairfield to victory. Her four points raised her career scoring total to 39 points (14 goals, 11 assists), moving her into ninth place all-time at Fairfield. Her 14 goals also ties her for 10th all-time at Fairfield... Marit Westenberg scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season against Siena, giving her at least one goal in four of her eight appearances. She also leads the team in scoring with 10 points...The Stags improved to 2-1 at home following the win against Siena, and bring a modest two-game home winning streak into this week’s three-game home stand... Fairfield will host Columbia on September 24, followed by Lock Haven on September 27, and Cornell on September 28...  Fairfield outshot the opposition in both games last week. The team has outshot the opposition in six of its eight games this season, and owns a 120-84 advantage in shots on the season.

Maine (3-4, 0-0) went 1-1 over the weekend with a 7-0 victory over Bryant and a 4-2 setback against Quinnipiac...Against Bryant, rookie of the week Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) had a hat trick with two assists for an eight-point effort...Junior Ellen Andrews (New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island/University of Prince Edward Island) had a goal and an assist in the game...Jackie D’Amato (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc), Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) and Courtney Veinotte (Canaan, Maine/Skowhegan) each added a goal...Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) made one save for her first career shutout...Maine outshot Bryant by a 35-to-two margin...Against Quinnipiac, Maine outshot the Bobcats 21-16...Freshmen Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) and Gardiner scored for Maine...Newton added an assist on Gardiner’s goal...Newton leads the team in scoring with 13 points while Gardiner is second with nine...Maine has outshot its opponents by a 148-84 margin including an 89-45 advantage in shots on goal... Maine returns to action on Sunday at Providence at 1 p.m. 

New Hampshire (4-4, 0-0) went 1-2 last week with a 4-3 overtime win at the College of the Holy Cross followed by losses to 11th-ranked University of Louisville, 4-3 in overtime, and third-ranked Syracuse, 10-0... The game at Holy Cross marked the Wildcats’ first OT game of the season... Freshman forward Hayley Rausch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tallied career highs in both goals (two) and points (four) in the  overtime loss to Louisville, which was played at Syracuse... In that game, Rausch gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead and forced the extra session with a goal on an untimed penalty corner at the end of regulation... Senior forward Sarah Craigue (Concord, N.H./Concord) has a personal best of five goals this season, and the 13 points ties her previous high... Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) made her first career start at Holy Cross; she exited the game at halftime with two saves and the 'Cats trailing 2-1... Fellow freshman goalie Jenna Lehman (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) recorded double digits in saves for the second time this season with 10 against Louisville... Kiera Williams (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded her team-leading third defensive save of the season with one at Syracuse... All four of UNH’s losses have been to nationally-ranked teams... In the other four games, the Wildcats have outscored the opposition 15-7... UNH concludes its stretch of five consecutive games away from home this week with games at Lafayette (Sept. 26) and Rutgers (Sept. 28). 

Vermont (3-4, 0-0) dropped a pair of contests last week, both on the road... On Friday the Cats fell to Kent State 3-0 in a neutral site game at Albany... It marked the first ever meeting between the two schools and the first time that Vermont was held scoreless this year... Friday was the first of two neutral site games for the Cats this season... The following day Vermont lost at Massachusetts, 2-0... Junior Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) made seven saves in goal for UVM against the Minutewomen... The Cats received a vote in the latest STX/NFHCA poll... Both of Vermont's opponents on the week were receiving votes as well... The Catamounts are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Dartmouth and then face William & Mary on Sunday in a neutral site game at Harvard.
