CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- After both produced successful weekends at the Sheraton Catamount Classic hosted by Vermont, UVM's Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) and Maine's Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) garnered the America East field hockey player and rookie of the week, respectively. Maynard helped the Catamounts claim the Sheraton Catamount Classic title, which included a 3-2 victory over #15 Ohio State on Saturday. Maynard factored in all three goals against the Buckeyes. The junior scored the first two goals, marking her first career two-goal game, and then set up the gamewinner with 24.7 seconds remaining. Maynard was named to the all-tournament team and leads the Catamounts in scoring this season with seven points. She ranks third in the league with a 0.60 goals per game average.
Gardiner, another member of the Sheraton Catamount Classic all-tournament team, led Maine to a victory over Monmouth on Saturday in Burlington. The freshman notched two goals and an assist against the Hawks. Gardiner also registered a shot on goal on Sunday against #15 Ohio State. The rookie is averaging 4.00 shots per game, good for second in America East.

No. 19 UAlbany (4-2 overall, 0-0 America East) traveled to the West Coast to take on California and Stanford over the weekend... The Great Danes dropped a 3-2 shootout loss to the Golden Bears before recording a 1-0 victory over the Cardinal...Freshman forwards Megan Springmeyer (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and Christina Patrick (Reading, Pa./Reading Catholic) scored UAlbany’s two regulation goals against California... It was Springmeyer’s second goal since being inserted into the starting lineup, while Patrick recorded her first collegiate tally... Patrick, along with senior Michele Polizois (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), converted each of their penalty strokes in the shootout portion of the contest... Polizois recorded the Great Danes’ lone goal in a 1-0 win over Stanford on Sunday... Senior midfielder Michelle Simpson (Middlesbrough, England/University of Teesside) and junior defender Jess Lindsey (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) recorded assists on the tally... Polizois leads the team with four goals and one assist and is tied for the lead in points with Simpson, who has recorded three goals and three assists for nine total points... UAlbany will continue non-conference play over the weekend, visiting Connecticut at 3 p.m. on Friday before hosting Kent State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
No. 18 Boston University (2-3, 0-0 America East) dropped a pair of weekend home contests, as No. 10 Michigan State came out on top, 2-0, on Saturday before a late Terrier rally came up short in a 2-1 loss to cross-town rival Northeastern on Sunday... The Terriers put up a good fight against the Spartans, as each side recorded seven shots on goal... Michigan State broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute before adding an insurance goal with 12:08 left in regulation... The loss snapped a seven-game home winning streak for the Terriers, who had not been shut out at Jack Barry Field since Oct. 18, 2006... On Sunday, the visiting Huskies took a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play before the Terriers embarked on a rally... Redshirt freshman Kali Cardoza (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) sent home a rebound with just over a minute left in regulation for her second goal of the year... Boston U. threatened in the final minute before Northeastern held on for the win... The Terriers held a 10-7 advantage in shots against the Huskies... Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) made five saves against the Spartans before adding two more versus Northeastern.... Boston U. will visit rival Boston College on Wednesday (Sept. 17) before traveling to Iowa for weekend games against Central Michigan and fourth-ranked Iowa.
Freshman Marit Westenberg (The Hague, The Netherlands) continues to make an impact on the Stags (1-5, 0-0 America East) as she scored her third goal of the season in a loss to Sacred Heart. She has tallied a goal in three of the team’s six games and has team highs for total points (six) and goals (three)...The Stags held a 14-3 advantage in shots during the first half of the Sacred Heart game and finished with a 21-12 edge but lost the game by a 4-1 count. Fairfield has outshot the competition in four of six games, falling short in the Villanova game and the Hofstra contest. For the season, Fairfield has an 89-61 advantage in shots, including a 46-18 edge in the first half...The Stags finish up a five-game road trip this week when they travel to Quinnipiac University for a Wednesday afternoon game. Fairfield returns home on Friday for a match up with Siena College, the team’s first home game since August 30. The Siena game will start a four-game home stand that includes Columbia (Sept. 24), Lock Haven (Sept. 27), and Cornell (Sept. 28).
Maine (2-3, 0-0 America East) went 1-1 at the Sheraton Catamount Classic over the weekend...The Black Bears defeated Monmouth on Saturday, 3-2...Freshman Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) had two goals and an assist to lead Maine to the win...Gardiner had eight shots in the game...Fellow freshman Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) had the other goal for the Black Bears...Freshman Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) got the win in net for Maine...Fleck made three saves in the game...In the second game against #15 Ohio State, Maine lost 4-0...Mitchell had three shots for Maine...Gardiner and sophomore MaireDineen (Toronto, Ontario/Michael Power/St. Joseph) were both named to the Sheraton Catamount Classic All-Tournament Team...Maine returns home next weekend when the Black Bears host Bryant at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Quinnipiac at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
New Hampshire (3-2, 0-0 America East) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of 10th-ranked Michigan State with a 6-1 home loss on Sept. 14... UNH had won its initial two home games of the 2008 season and eight of its last 10 at Memorial Field... Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Lehman (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) made a career-high 15 saves against the Spartans... She exited the game with UNH trailing 4-0 and 11:20 remaining in the game... The 15 saves marked the highest total by a Wildcat goalie since Margaux Shute, now a UNH assistant coach, made 16 saves Oct. 15, 2006 against Providence College... Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union Academy), another UNH rookie, scored her second goal in as many games with a tally against Michigan State... Leah Boody (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) has an assist in each of the last two games; she recorded one assist in her first two years as a Wildcat... Kiera Williams (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) was credited with her second defensive save of the season in the game vs. MSU... UNH had allowed a total of just five second-half goals in four games before surrendering five to the Spartans... The Wildcats have the edge over their opponents in both shooting percentage (.179/.171) and shots-on-goal percentage (.597/.561)... UNH begins a stretch of five consecutive games away from home Sept. 17 at Holy Cross.
Vermont (3-2, 0-0 America East) won the Sheraton Catamount Classic over the weekend, defeating #15 Ohio State 3-2 and Monmouth 2-1 in overtime... The Cats have now won three straight after starting the year 0-2... The victory over Ohio State was the second in school history against a ranked opponent as the Cats defeated #17 Providence last season (1-0)... Junior Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) scored Vermont's first two goals and then set up senior Lauren Burke (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) for the game-winner against the Buckeyes with 24.7 seconds let in the contest... After entering her senior year with no goals scored, Burke has three in the last three games now... On Sunday freshman Mackenzie Williams (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) netted her first career goal, scoring 4:32 into overtime to lift the Cats over Monmouth... Burke scored the Cats' first goal of the contest... The game marked the Cats first overtime contest this season... Vermont is now 5-1 all-time in its home tournament and has now been crowned champs in two of the three years (2006 and 2008)... Jen Angers (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) joined Maynard and Williams on the all-tournament team... The Catamounts have won 13 of their last 14 at Moulton Winder Field... Vermont returns to action on Friday when it travels for a neutral site game against Kent State at the University at Albany (7 p.m.). Vermont will then be at Massachusetts on Saturday (7 p.m.).
