CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The America East baseball season is officially complete, but conference players still continue to receive regional honors from various organizations. Two America East baseball All-Conference honorees recently were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast (ABCA) All-Region First Team. Several other players participated in the New England All-Star Game at Fenway Park on Saturday, June 14.
Maine senior Curt Smith and Stony Brook sophomore Mike Stephan both received ABCA All-Regional honors from the organization on Wednesday, June 18.
Smith, the 2008 America East Player of the Year, batted a conference-high .403 and scored 60 runs. The first baseman also blasted 11 home runs, drove in 37 runs and hit 17 doubles. Smith was selected in the MLB Amateur Draft earlier this month by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Stephan was a second-team All-Conference selection this year as a designated hitter. He finished 12th in the nation in on-base percentage (.518) and also hit 11 homers. Stephan helped the Seawolves win the 2008 America East Baseball Championship by scoring or driving in 86 of Stony Brook's runs this season.
Vermont junior lefty Joe Serafin earned the Pitcher of the Game at the All-Star Game last weekend. The 2008 America East Pitcher of the Game hurled two scoreless innings, striking out three. Hartford's Chad Greiner received starting pitcher duties, throwing out the first pitch for the University Division All-Stars (Division 1). Another Catamounts, senior Eric Thompson also tossed two shutout innings of relief and tallied two strikeouts.
Also getting into into the game was Vermont's outfielder Justin Milo and third baseman Kyle Massie. Players had to be named an All-Star by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association late last month to participate in the All-Star Game. Also being named All-Stars but not playing in the game were Maine's Smith and Joe Miller.
The College Division All-Stars (Division 2 & 3) defeated the University Division for the second straight year, 6-3.
