Saturday Final Results
ORONO, Maine -- Boston University women and University of New Hampshire men lead after day one of the 2008 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Competition will conclude on Sunday.
The Lady Terriers built an early lead through six-events with 56 points outdistancing their closest competition New Hampshire (42) by 14 points. Binghamton (27.5) sits in third, while defending champion Albany (27) is currently fourth. Maine (23.5), UMBC (22), Stony Brook (18), Vermont (17) and Hartford (0) round out the nine-team field.
Andrea Walkonen's America East record-breaking performance in the 10,000-meter run has helped the Terriers develop the lead heading into the final day of competition. She finished in 34:42.03 breaking the former mark of 35:53.62 that was set in 1997. Another notable performance was Albany's Laura Cummings first place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event that also earned her a NCAA Regional qualifying cut in a time of 10:33.60. Stony Brook's Carolina Cortes (10:41.77), Boston's Jessica Cickay (10:43.26), and Stony Brook's Jessica Hampson (10:47.32) finished second, third, and fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase respectively and also qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
On the men's side, New Hampshire (75 points) leads defending champion Albany (60) by only 5 points. Binghamton is 33 points off the lead at 42 points, Maine is fourth with 29 points, while Boston University (23.5) sits in fifth place. UMBC (17.5), Stony Brook (10), Hartford (10) and Vermont (6) round out the nine-team field after seven events complete.
Jordan Horwitz's conference record-breaking performance in the 10,000-meter run has helped the Wildcats jump out to the early lead. Horwitz ran to victory in a time of 30:41.69. Also breaking a conference record was Albany's Luke Schoen in the pole vault with a height of 5.26 meters. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase Boston University's Eric Ashe (8:51.33), Stony Brook's Alex Felce (8:53.45), Maine's Miles Barlett (8:53.69), and Matthew O'Connor (8:58.10) finished first, second, third, and fourth respectively and also qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
