Stony Brook is Headed to NCAA Regional in Tempe

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The Stony Brook baseball team (34-24 overall record) will travel to Tempe, Arizona to play Arizona State (45-11) in a NCAA Championship Regional Round. The Seawolves will begin the tournament against the Sun Devils Friday evening at 10 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. local time. Also in the Tempe Regional is Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.

Each of the 16 regionals feature four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, May 30, to Monday, June 2 (if necessary).

Stony Brook earned the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship by winning the 2008 America East Baseball Championship. The Seawolves defeated Binghamton, 6-0, in the title game on Saturday, May 2, led by the tournament's most outstanding player, Steve Mazzurco, who batted .455 in the tournament with four runs, one RBI, and two doubles in three games. This will be Stony Brook's second appearance in the NCAA.

The Sun Devils are the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and have the third-best offense in the country averaging 9.6 runs per game. Arizona State was the Pacific-10 conference champion and is making its 32nd overall appearance in the NCAA tournament.
