Outdoor Track and Field Competes In Postseason Meets

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Several America East Conference outdoor track and field teams competed at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire this past weekend. University at Albany hosted the 14th Annual UAlbany Spring Classic on Saturday, May 10 at University Field. Stony Brook University sent three athletes to the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge on Randall's Island this past weekend in hopes of qualifying for the ECAC and IC4A Championships.

Boston University's women team finished 15th at the New England Championships, while the men's team placed 28th. Junior Edwina Clark earned gold in the long jump for the women with a distance of 5.73 meters. On the men's side, the senior trio of Jake Laroe, Nick Goodman, and Patrick Hoye competed in the 1500 meter event and placed second, 10th, and 21st, respectively.

The University of Hartford men's team finished 33rd at the New England Championships, while the women finished 18th. Alex Ivanov scored all the men's points in the decathlon, where he finished in fifth place overall with a total of 5,840 points. On the women's side, the top scorers were Kaycee Martinez and Sherilyn Nicholas. Martinez was second place in 400-meter hurdles (1:01.91). Nicholas saw her top finish in the heptathlon, where she finished in sixth place overall with a final score of 4,035 points.

The University of Maine men's team finished ninth at the New England Championships as the 4x100 meter relay team led the way and captured a first-place finish with a time of 42.02. Dan Poirier is the New England Champion in the javelin with a throw of 200-7. On the women's side, Tanya Simard led the way for the Black Bears as she took fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

The University of New Hampshire women's outdoor track and field team was powered to a second-place overall finish at the New England Championships by five individual second-place performers. Kiah Quarles placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.12), while her sister, freshman Camille Quarles, jumped to a second-place finish in the triple jump (11.52 meters). Sophomore Rita Ciambra took second in pole vault with a height of 3.65 meters. The Wildcats' 4x400-meter relay and 4x800-meter relay earned second-place finishes as well in time of 3:50.49 and 9:14.59 respectively. The men's team finished in 11th place, led by the 4x400-meter relay team finish in a time of 3:17.27.

The University of Vermont men placed 12th overall, while the women were 15th at the New England Championships this past weeked. The men's 4x100 meter relay team placed third overall with a time of 42.89 to lead the team. Sophomore Aaron Campbell finished fourth in the 100-meter event with a time of 11.16 and teammate Cameron Grant was fifth overall at 11.24. On the women's side, Corinne DiPietro finished second in the javelin with a throw of 40.61 meters. Carmen Lagala placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:10.78). Kailey Jasper was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.82.

The University at Albany hosted the 14th Annual UAlbany Spring Classic on Saturday, May 10 at University Field. Sophomore Luke Schoen set a school and facility record in the men's pole vault clearing the bar raised to 17-feet, 5-inches, tying the 11th best national collegiate mark this season. Fred Casimo won the long jump in 23-feet, 4.50-inches. In the women's competition, freshman Rebecca Kelly qualified for the USAT&F Junior National Championships in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.12. She will compete in Columbus, Ohio on June 20-22 at the Ohio State University's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Stony Brook's track and field team sent three athletes to the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge on Randall's Island this past weekend in hopes of qualifying for the ECAC and IC4A Championships. Lisa Voltaire completed the 1,500-meter event in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:33.61, which was quick enough for second place. On the men's side, Iain Whitfield took second in the 1,500-meter event in an IC4A qualifying time of 3:51.17.
