CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Six America East student-athletes were named to a 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Baseball or Softball Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last week.

Four America East softball players were named to the University Division First or Second Teams in District 1 and are among 23 athletes honored on those teams from throughout the Northeast. Albany senior outfielder Amber Maisonet (Newburgh, N.Y.) landed on the first team, while Maine junior infielder Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.), Hartford junior outfielder Amanda Sais (Tustin, Calif.) and Vermont senior outfielder Rachelle Eloschuk (Calgary, Alberta) were each honored on the second team.

In District 2, comprised of schools throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and New Jersey, UMBC senior infielder Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md.) made her third straight appearance on the University Division team.

Stony Brook baseball's sophomore DH Michael Stephan (Pathogue, N.Y.) received second-team status in the District 1 University Division.

To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.

CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams.

All six student-athletes are now eligible to become ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans to be announced later this summer.
