VESTAL,
N.Y. -- The Binghamton University athletics department has announced
that women's basketball coach Rich Conover is being reassigned
to other responsibilities within the department, and will not
return as head coach for the 2008-09 season.
Associate
head coach Nicole Scholl has been named head coach for the year.
The University will then conduct a national search at an appropriate
time.
"We
are very fortunate to have someone of Nikki's talent and leadership
ability to step in to this role," Director of Athletics
Joel Thirer said. "Nikki has strong knowledge of the game
and respect from the team."
Scholl
has been at Binghamton for nine years - the last two as associate
head coach. She is a former All-American at Moorhead State and
began her coaching career with national Division II powerhouse
North Dakota State.
She
has served as the Bearcats' recruiting coordinator and has also
specialized in post-player development. Since BU joined the America
East in 2001-02, Scholl's efforts have resulted in 16 all-conference
accolades.
Conover
compiled a 67-78 record (46%) in five full seasons as head coach.
This past season, the Bearcats went 11-19 and finished fifth
out of nine teams in the America East.
