VESTAL, N.Y.-- Ricky Lucas scored 18 points, grabbed four
rebounds and made four steals to lead eighth-seeded Stony Brook to a
73-65 overtime victory over ninth-seeded Maine in the first round of
the 2008 America East Men's Basketball Championship on Friday evening at Binghamton University's Events Center. Box Score.
The Seawolves (7-22) advance to take on top-seeded UMBC (21-8) in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at 12 noon.
The
Black Bears (7-23) led 33-28 at the break and grew their lead to 11
four minutes into the second stanza. Stony Brook fought back from that
deficit and tied the game at 50 with just over seven minutes to go and
took a one-point lead on a three-pointer by Nick Carter with 2:57
remaining. After a pair of SBU free throws, Maine's Mark Socoby, who
scored 30 points and hit a championship-record nine three-pointers,
banked home his biggest trey of the night from the top of the key with
4.2 seconds remaining to force overtime.
But, the Seawolves outscored the Black Bears 16-8 in the extra frame to move on in the tournament for the first time since 2005.
Lucas was joined in double figures by Carter (16), Demetrius Young (15) and Mitchell Beauford (11).
Kaimondre Owes added 10 points for Maine.
