CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The Stony Brook pair of sophomore designated hitter Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and senior righty Tom Koehler (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) captured the America East player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the period ending March 30. For the second straight week, a Binghamton freshman earned the league's Rookie of the Week as right fielder Peter Bregartner (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) brought home the award this week. Stephan posted a batting average of .600 and an on-base percentage of .667 this week. The sophomore hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning against NYIT in a game the Seawolves went on to win, 10-7. Stephan came around for five runs and batted in three more. On the week he hit three doubles as well as the home run, walked four times and avoided striking out in 14 at bats.
Koehler went the distance to pick up the win in the Seawolves’ home opener on Friday, as well as his third Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered seven hits over nine innings of work, allowing just one run while striking out a season-high 11 batters. With his only performance of the week, Koehler improved his season ERA to 2.88, good for second in the conference.
Bregartner went 5-for-8 against 11th-ranked Wichita State, and added five more hits, including a home run, in the series against FDU. The rookie hit .476 (10-for-21) for the week with six runs and three RBI. He reached base on balls once and stole two bases in as many attempts on the base paths. Bregartner has scored runs in six straight games and has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.

UAlbany (4-19-1 overall record, 0-0 AE record) went 0-5 in five games last week... Opened the week with a 9-7 loss at UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, March 25 at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C... Junior Ryan Gugel (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Genesee C.C.) and freshman Jamie Liebowitz (Queens, N.Y./Cardoza) each registered two RBI in the contest... UNCG took the series-finale, 12-4, on Wednesday, March 26... Junior Sean Donovan (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) led UAlbany with two hits... On Friday, March 28, the Great Danes lost 9-3 to Towson at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.... UAlbany took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning, but the Tigers answered back with three runs in the sixth and six runs in eighth... Senior Mike Konstanty (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta/Winthrop) homered twice and sophomore Brendan Rowland (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) picked up three hits in the contest ... On Saturday, March 29, the Great Danes were swept in a doubleheader by Towson, coming up a run short (8-7) in the opener and falling 4-2 in the nightcap... Rowland blasted a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning of the first game to get UAlbany within a run... In the nightcap, Gugel launched a two-run blast in the top of the sixth inning to give the Great Danes a 2-1 lead... The Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame for the victory... Freshman Dave Kubiak (Southold, N.Y./Southold) pitched five innings, allowing five hits and just an unearned run in the first inning, but did not factor into the decision.
Binghamton (7-15, 0-0 AE) went 2-4 during the week. The Bearcats dropped two games to 11th-ranked Wichita State, the highest-ranked opponent in program history. The Binghamton split a four-game set with Fairleigh Dickinson, losing a pair of one-run games... The team has lost nine games this spring by two or fewer runs, including seven one-run defeats... Freshman right fielder Peter Bregartner (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) hit .476 on the week, and has hit safely in eight of his last nine games... Sophomore left fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y./La Salle Institute) hit .385 in the FDU series with two home runs and two doubles. Charron leads the team with four home runs and a .518 slugging percentage... Senior pitcher Gio Yannuzzi (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) went six strong innings against FDU, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts. Despite an 0-2 season mark, Yannuzzi leads all Binghamton starters with a 2.70 earned run average... Junior reliever Greg Lane (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) notched two saves in the FDU series, lowering his ERA to 1.29... Binghamton opens its America East slate this weekend with four games at Stony Brook. Last spring the Bearcats and Seawolves split the series.
The Hawks (6-11, 0-0 AE) finished a six game week with a 3-3 overall record, including a sweep over instate rival Sacred Heart at home in the home opener ... Hartford was led on the week by Bill Perry (East Falmouth, Mass./ Falmouth) who was one of two players batting over .400 for the week ... Perry finished with eight hits in 19 at bats for a .421 batting average ... He also drove in five runs, including three on a three run home run against Massachusetts ... Also hitting well for Hartford was Matt Walker (East Lyme, Conn./Catawabe) who finished with seven hits in 17 at bats for a .412 batting average ... Walker drove in a team best of six runs for the week, including three in the Hawks win over Quinnipiac in the second game of a doubleheader against the Bobcats ... A pair of Hawks hurlers pitched complete games, both coming in the sweep of Sacred Heart ... Weston Szymanski (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) pitched the first, a nine inning, eight hit win, his first win of the season ... Szymanski allowed three runs, two of them earned, while striking out seven batters ... The final complete game was the second win of the season for Chris Greiner (Elkridge, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) ... Greiner struck out nine batters, a season high for the Hartford pitching staff, while allowing two runs, one of them earned, on three hits in a seven inning game.
The University of Maine baseball team (7-13, 0-0 AE) split four games with Wagner over the weekend... The Black Bears won the first and last games of the series, but dropped the middle two games by identical 2-1 scores... Maine got four outstanding pitching performances from their starting pitchers on the weekend at Wagner.... Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central/High Point), Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario/St. Michael’s School) and Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) all three pitched complete games for the Black Bears...Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario/Cardinal Leger) pitched the fourth game and went four innings... All four starting pitchers allowed just two runs on the weekend and all four struck out eight batters... Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) pitched three innings in relief on Sunday and allowed just one hit in those three innings... Maine pitchers recorded 34 strikeouts over the weekend against Wagner.... Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) saw his 16 game hitting streak snapped on Saturday... He rebounded and finished with a hit in the final three games of the series... Lugbauer has a hit in 19 of Maine’s 20 games this season... Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass./Worcester) was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases on the weekend... He is 7-for-9 in stolen bases on the season... Rookie Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine/Old Town) had a huge two-run double on Sunday in Maine’s 3-2 win over Wagner.
UMBC (6-13, 0-0 AE) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory over Mount St. Mary’s last Tuesday, but dropped their next four games with a 6-5 loss at Maryland on Wednesday, 6-3 and 8-6 losses to Longwood on Saturday, and a 5-4 loss to Longwood again on Sunday... Of the Retrievers 13 losses this season, nine have been decided by three runs or less, including their last five... Junior Scott Peddicord (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) led the Retrievers, batting .533 in four games with one double and two RBI, including going 3-for-5 against Longwood on Sunday... Senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) tallied two home runs for the week, both of them coming against Longwood on Saturday, in consecutive at-bats during game two... Sophomore Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) earned the only win for the Retrievers, after pitching seven innings and giving up just four runs on 10 hits while fanning one against Mount St. Mary’s... The Retrievers travel to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to face Georgetown before opening America East conference-play this weekend against Vermont, beginning with a 4:00 p.m. contest on Friday.

Senior Tom Koehler struck out a season-high 11 in the Seawolves home opener, a 3-1 victory over New York Tech ... Sophomore Michael Stephan posted an on-base percentage of .667 in 24 plate appearances this week and reached base on a hit by pitch six times ... Stephan also smashed a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning in game two of the doubleheader against New York Tech on Saturday, a game that the Seawolves went on to win 10-7 ... Senior Gary Novakowski tossed a complete game in the Seawolves 7-1 seven-inning victory over NYIT on Saturday afternoon, allowing just seven hits ... Junior Rob Dyer hit a grand slam in Stony Brook’s 10-8 loss to Fordham on Wednesday ... Leadoff hitter Brian Witkowski had an on-base percentage of .500 in SBU’s five games this week, scoring a team-high six runs ... The Seawolves played their first home game this week after opening the season with 16 road contests.
In its farthest-ever trip west, Vermont (5-9, 0-0 AE) was swept in a weekend series at New Mexico of the Mountain West Conference ... The series was played at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M., the 11,212-seat state-of-the-art home of the city's franchise in the Triple A Pacific Coast League ... Senior Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass./Salisbury) had an excellent series at the plate against the Lobos pitching staff. He hit .500 (6-for-12) with a double and five RBI in the four games ... In the first 14 games this season Magrass leads the team with 15 RBI and now has 107 in his career to move into fifth all-time in program history ... Sophomore Justin Milo (Edina, Minn./Edina/Cornell) had four hits against New Mexico including two doubles and his team-best fourth triple of the season ... Of Milo's 21 hits to open the season, 11 have gone for extra bases (also with five doubles and two home runs) ... Sophomore Ethan Paquette (West Burke, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) hit safely in all four games this weekend to extend his hitting streak to eight games ... In this stretch Paquette is hitting .431 (14-for-31) ... The Catamounts open America East play with a four-game series at UMBC this weekend.
