Davis and McBride Earn Men's Lacrosse Weekly Honors After Leading Teams to Upset Wins

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- UMBC's Maxx Davis (Baltimore, Md./Friends) and Stony Brook's Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) have been named America East weekly award winners in men's lacrosse after leading their respective teams to upset wins last week. Davis earned Player of the Week honors, while McBride garnered rookie accolades for the week ending March 16.

Davis, a sophomore, scored an unassisted goal with 1.5 seconds left in the third overtime period to give the Retrievers a 9-8 victory over sixth-ranked Maryland on Friday. Davis, who has six scores in as many games after making just one appearance last season, also dished out two assists. UMBC, which is ranked 13th in the latest Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, has won two straight and three of its last four.

McBride, a freshman, led the Seawolves to a 19-17 win over No. 7 Delaware on Saturday. McBride scored a school-record 10 goals and was just one shy of the NCAA mark. He also added two assists and three ground balls. Stony Brook has won back-to-back games and is ranked 20th in the most recent rankings.

Albany (0-5) endured its fourth consecutive one-goal defeat in a 7-6 loss to No. 14 Drexel on March 15 in the Great Danes’ home opener... Ron Garling scored the go-ahead goal with 6:42 remaining to end UAlbany’s run of six straight wins in home debuts... The Great Danes also lost to their fourth national top-20 squad this season... Steve Ammann (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) tied career-highs in goals (2) and points (3) vs. Drexel... freshman Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y. / West Islip) had missed the previous three games with an injury, but returned to record his first points as a collegian with one goal and two assists... freshman Kyle Crotty (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) had tied the contest at five apiece in the third quarter on an extra-man goal... UMass held off a late UAlbany rally in a 9-8 decision on March 11... The two teams battled to a one-goal outcome for the fifth consecutive year... The Great Danes scored three times in a one-minute-and-12 second span and had two opportunities to draw even despite trailing 9-5 with less than three minutes left... Derek Dale (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Sachem) netted two fourth-quarter goals... Brett Queener (Penn Yan, N.Y. / Penn Yan Academy) made double-figure saves for the 19th time in his career at UMass... Queener stopped 10 shots and matched a career-best seven ground balls... The senior goalkeeper is sixth on the program’s all-time list with 356 saves... Jordan Levine (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) had two goals and two assists... Levine has totaled four or more points against eight opponents during his career... Princeton may be the highest-ranked opponent to play at John Fallon Field on March 21 when the polls are released this week... Loyola was ranked No. 11 entering last year’s NCAA first-round game...

Binghamton (2-1) junior Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) scored four goals and tallied a pair of assists, leading Binghamton  to a 9-8 win over Sacred Heart (3-1) in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win is the Bearcats' second in a row and comes against a Pioneer team that is currently receiving votes in the USILA Top 20 Weekly Poll ... Mulheron's four goals and six total points ties his previous career-highs, both of which were set against Vermont on April 8, 2006. He now leads Binghamton with five goals and seven points so far this season ... junior goalie Larry Kline (Beverly, Mass.) made 10 saves, marking the third consecutive game he has posted 10 or more stops. He also scooped up a game-high and season-high seven ground balls. Through three games this season, Kline is among the national leaders with a 4.00 goals against average and a .745 save percentage. He has also averaged 4.00 ground balls per game ... t!
he Bearcats are now a perfect 11-for-11 in man-down situations this season ... Binghamton heads to Syracuse for a 3:30 p.m. game next Saturday, which will be aired by Time Warner in both the Binghamton and Syracuse areas. In the Binghamton area, the game will be carried on Time Warner Cable Channel 23.

Hartford (0-6) dropped games to Harvard and Quinnipiac last week. The Hawks fell 11-2 at home against the Crimson early in the week before suffering an 8-5 setback to the Bobcats over the weekend... Sophomore Justin Bearse (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) led the team in scoring for the week with three goals. Junior Daniel Clough (Piedmont, Calif./DeMatha) and freshman Michael Cudmore (Ashburn, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) each recorded a pair of assists... Junior Jon McMahon (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and freshman Lee Malandrino (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) split time in goal for the Hawks, each starting a game. Malandrino got the nod against Harvard, his first collegiate action, and finished with seven saves. McMahon also made seven saves in 60 minutes against Quinnipiac... Hartford will next play at Siena on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m.

UMBC (3-3) sophomore midfielder Maxx Davis’ (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) score an unassisted goal with 1.5 seconds remaining in the third overtime period gave the host UMBC Retrievers a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Maryland in an intra-state men’s lacrosse clash before 2,113 fans at UMBC Stadium... UMBC has won three of its last four games... The Retrievers had forced overtime as junior attackman Ryan Smith (Fallston, Md./Fallston/CCBC-Essex) scored his team-high tenth goal of the season with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation... Davis posted his first three-point game with a goal and two assists. Junior Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) posted his first three-goal game of the season, while sophomore midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added two goals and an assist... junior netminder Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) made 11 saves in nearly 72 minutes of action, including three brilliant stops in overtime...  The win was UMBC’s fourth straight positive decision in overtime after a 3-0 mark in extra time last year... The team travels to Ohio State for a March 22 contest with the Buckeyes.

Stony Brook’s (2-2) win over Delaware was the second in a row for the Seawolves and the first on the road this season ... Delaware was the highest ranked team (#7) that the Seawolves have ever defeated ... the previous highest ranked team SBU downed was #16 Rutgers back in 2005 ... Stony Brook has now scored 36 goals over the last two games after scoring just six at Harvard ... the 35 combined goals at Delaware was just one shy of the school record of 36 set between SBU and Drew in 1985 making it the highest scoring game in SBU’s Division I history ... after tying the school mark with 11 combined goals in the third quarter last week vs. Siena, Stony Brook and Delaware broke the mark with 12 goals in the third last week ... senior Bo Tripodi’s two goals this week gives him 94 for his career, tying him for fourth all-time at Stony Brook ... Stony Brook’s three Canadian players (Duch, Crowley and McBride) have now combined to score 30 of the team’s 55 goals.

Vermont (0-6) dropped a 15-5 decision at Colgate last Tuesday and a 7-4 decision at Penn State on Saturday ... Junior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) had three goals on the week to extend his team leading total to 10 on the year ... He also has a team-high 40 shots this season ... Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) has a team leading five assists on the season ... Vermont’s defense held Penn State to just 14 shots on goal and a total of two shots in the fourth quarter ... The Catamounts out shot the Nittany Lions 20-13 in the second half and 38-26 for the game ... They held PSU to 0-for-10 on the man advantage ... Freshman Liam Teer (Vancouver, B.C./Lawrenceville) went 9-for-14 on face offs and grabbed a team best six ground balls in the loss to Penn State ... Senior Trevor Wagar (Guelph, Ont./Herkimer/Our Lady Loundes) had a pair of man-up goals against the Nittany Lions ... Vermont meets Bellarmine in its home opener at Moulton Winder Field this Saturday (3/22) at 12 noon.
