UMBC Men and Women Crowned 2008 America East Men's and Women's Swimming And Diving Champions

After an exciting night of competition the UMBC men and women walk away victorious as the 2008 America East Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Champions. This is the fifth consecutive year the men have won and the second consecutive year the women have won.

The UMBC men won with a score of 929 also breaking the record for most points scored at an America East Swimming and Diving Championship by a men's team. Boston University was second overrall with 749 points, followed by Binghamton in third with 707. The Stony Brook men received fourth place with 459 points and Maine got fifth with 282 points.

After four days of grueling competition the UMBC women came out on top with a score of 741 points. Boston University placed second with a score of 685 points, while New Hampshire earned a close third with 628.50 points. In fourth place was Vermont with 462.50 points, fifth place was Maine 370.50 points, Binghamton finished sixth with 302.50 points, and Stony Brook earned seventh with 205 rounding out the field.

In the 1650-freestyle, a timed final event, Vermont's Molly MacMillan won it in a time of 16:57.83, while Stony Brook's Lukasz Ochmanski won on the men's side with a time of 15:50.67.

On Day 4 of swimming competition Vermont's Kate Weaver won the 200-backstroke in time of 2:02.83. In the 100-freestyle UMBC's Lindsey Engler sprinted to the finish, winning in a time of 51.32. UMBC's Tina Cantwell won the 200-breaststroke in a time of 2:15.92, also making a NCAA-B qualifying time after making the cut in the 100-breaststroke last night. In the 200-butterfly UMBC's Lindsay Sherman won the race in a 2:06.06, touching out New Hampshire's Mattie Fowler (2:06.11) and third place Boston's Sarah Doersam (2:06.77).

On the men's side UMBC's Rasmus Kutt, seeded third after morning prelims, came back to win it in a time of 1:49.77. UMBC's Justin Bronson won the 100-freestyle in a blazing time of 46.02. In the 200-breaststroke, 3-time defending champion Binghamton's Brenno Varanda won his third event of the weekend by beating the field in a winning time of 2:02.78 and breaking his own meet record from 2007. Brad Reitz took the 200-butterfly in a time of 1:51.25.

The final event of the night was the 400-freestyle relay. The Boston women's team of Brigette O'Shaughnessy, Maria McIntyre, Emily Munday, and Eve Kinsella won the event in a time of 3:29.54. The UMBC men finshed in style by winning in a time of 3:04.78.

The 2008 Men's and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year was Boston University. The Female Diver of the Meet was Boston's Tess Waresmith. The Male Diver of the Meet was Boston's Andre Watson. The Female Rookie of the Meet was New Hampshire's Amy Perrault. The Male Rookie of the Meet was UMBC's Brad Reitz. The Female Most OUtstanding Swimmer of the Meet was Boston's Eve Kinsella. The Male Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet was Binghamton's Brenno Varanda. New Hampshire's Kary Goodman won the Coaches Award for most points scored by a female over four years of competition with 212 points. UMBC's Eric Skrabacz won the Coaches Award for most points scored by a male over four years of competition with 142 points.
