UMBC Men Widen Lead While Boston Women Battle to Hold Lead

The UMBC men and Boston University women hold the lead after the third night of the 2008 America East Swimming & Diving Championships at University of Maine's Aquatic Center on Saturday evening.

The UMBC men widen their lead with a score of 671 while Boston follows in second with 513 points and Binghamton holds onto third with 470.  Stony Brook is in fourth with 330 points, while Maine is in fifth with 203 points, rounding out the five-team field.

On the women's side only 19.5 points determine the difference between the first and third place team after an exciting night of competition.  The Boston University women (488) lead the way followed by UMBC only 11 points behind with 477 total points, and New Hampshire in a very close third with 468.50 points. In fourth place is Vermont (318.50), fifth place is Maine (276.50) followed by sixth place Binghamton (235.50), and seventh place Stony Brook (142).

In the men's 3-meter diving final Boston's freshman Tanner Knorr won with a score of 304.45, followed by fellow Terrier Andre Watson (292.70) and Binghamton's Ryan Graham (284.15) in third.

On Day 3 of swimming competition UNH's Mattie Fowler won the 400-IM in a time of 4:29.03.  In the women's 100-butterfly Boston's Emily Munday swam a 56.98 to win the race over UNH's Kary Goodman who finished with a time of 57.03.  The 200-freestyle came down to the last 15 yards with Vermont's Colleen Clark pulling it out to win in a time of 1:50.62 just .31 tenths ahead of Boston's Eve Kinsella.  In the 100-breaststroke, UMBC's Tina Cantwell won the event in a time of 1:03.58 just missing a NCAA-B cut by .03 one-hundreths of a second.  The 100-backstroke was won by New Hampshire's Amy Perrault in a time of 56.11.  
  
On the men's side Binghamton's Brenno Varanda touched out UMBC's Matt Carson in the 400-IM with a winning time of 4:00.33, as Carson finished in a 4:00.90.  In the 100-butterfly UMBC's freshman Brad Reitz came back to win the event in a time of 49.79.  UMBC's Justin Bronson won the 200-freestyle in a blazing time of 1:38.65.  Boston's Eric Carlson swam the 100-breaststroke in a time of 55.84 winning the event and setting a new conference meet record.  In the 100 backstroke UMBC's Rasmus Kutt won the event in a time of 50.26 as teammate Milos Djukic finished in second with a time of 51.05.  

The final event of the night was the 400-medley relay. The UMBC women's relay team of Tereza Kaplanova, Tina Cantwell, Daniele Surkovich, and Lindsey Engler sprinted to the finish in a winning time of 3:49.11 setting a new conference meet record.  After an early lead, the men's 400-medley relay was won by Boston University's Jeff Wurm, Eric Carlson, Matt Rickett, and Arik Seiler in a time of 3:23.15.          

The final day of competition continues on Sunday with three sessions of swimming events. The first session of the day gets underway at 10 a.m. with the swimming prelims, at 2pm the 1650 swimming event is scheduled to begin, and at 5:30p.m. the swimming finals of the 1650-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200-butterfly, and 400-freestyle relay will take place.
