Ochmanski And Weaver Repeat, Binghamton Divers Win Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Stony Brook University’s Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) and University of Vermont’s Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Ct./South Burlington) each earned their second America East male and female Swimmer of the Week accolades while Binghamton Unicersity divers Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Kristen Maney (New Paltz, N.Y./Fordham) dethroned Boston University to capture this week’s male and female Diver of the Week awards.

Ochmanski, a sophomore, earned first place with a school-record breaking time of 1:56.11 in the 200 IM during the Seawolves’ meet against Iona and St Francis (N.Y.) on Tuesday evening. Ochmanski went on to win the 1000 yard freestyle (10.05.64) and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. This is Ochmanski’s second time winning the male Swimmer of the Week award this season, the first came on November 18.

Weaver, a sophomore, earned three individual victories and was part of a winning relay team during the Catamount victory over America East rival New Hampshire. Weaver’s wins in the 100 (57.60) and 200 yard backstrokes (2:02.52) and the 200 IM (2:08.52) all broke pool records as did the winning 200 medley relay she swam in (1:48.92). Weaver’s points were crucial in the victory over the Wildcats, who were ranked above Vermont in the preseason coaches’ poll. This is Weaver’s second weekly accolade of the season, the first came on November 18.

Graham, a senior, swept the one and three-meter diving events in Binghamton’s meet against Cornell with scores of 280.80 and 297.83, respectively. This is Graham’s second sweep of the boards at a meet this season.

Maney, a senior, won the three-meter board event at the Bearcat meet against Cornell with a score of 239.03. Mayer will graduate this December and capped her diving career with a first-place finish in her final meet and diver of the week accolades.

Binghatmon- The Bearcats hosted Cornell in their second home meet of the season and came up short with the men falling, 102-197, and the women, 114-185. Highlighting the women was senior diver Kristen Maney who will be graduating in December. In her last collegiate meet, Maney earned a first-place finish on the three-meter board with a score of 239.03. Sophomore Amanda Ciccone was the top scorer for the women, placing first in the 200 breast (2:30.73) and second in the 100 breast (1:10.33). For the men, senior Andrew Palumbo won the 100 breaststroke (59.19) and earned third in the 200 breast (2:13.92), while freshman Joe Perez-Rogers earned first in the 100 backstroke (52.30).

Binghamton's Story

Boston U- The Terriers did not compete this week and will ring in the New Year with their next meet at Northeastern on January 17 at 12.

Maine- The Black Bears competed in the two-day Harold Anderson Invitation at the University of Rhode Island this weekend where the women finished second out of six teams and the men earned fourth out of seven. Senior Colleen Miller continued her stellar season with three different individual freestyle victories. Miller’s victories came in the 1000 (10:41.53), the 500 (5:10.57) and the 200 (1:56.72) freestyle events. The women earned five second-place finishes on the weekend and totaled 721.5 points. Maine’s men earned a total of 547 points and were led by freshman Brian Landry who placed second in the 200- and third in the 100-breaststroke with times of 2:13.19 and 1:02.32, respectively.

Maine's Story

UMBC- The UMBC men and women's swimming and diving teams did not compete this week, and have finished competition for the 2008 part of their season. The Retrievers' next meet is January 17 at East Carolina.

UNH- The Wildcats traveled to Burlington to take on America East rivals Vermont and in a hard-fought cat fight, the Wildcats fell to Vermont, 118-174. The meet was closer than the score may indicate with New Hampshire being edged out of first-place in several events by under a second. Freshman Jessica Little earned two first-place finishes in the 200 (2:12.48) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.47) while grad student Jessie Ellisalcaide earned a pair of individual golds in the 50 (24.09) and 100 freestyle (52.56). Little went on to earn second-place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.48.

UNH's Story

Stony Brook- The Seawolves swept their meet against Iona and St Francis (N.Y.) on Tuesday night, putting the men at 3-4 on the season and the women at 3-5. The women beat Iona, 71.5-41.5, and St Francis, 85-28 while the men topped Iona, 69-39, and St Francis, 85-28. Freshman Darcy Heuser continued an outstanding rookie campaign winning the 500 (5:06.12) and 1000 yard freestyle (10:37.82) and a leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Sophomore Lucasz Ochmanski set a new school record in the 200 IM finishing in a time of 1:56.11. Ochmanski went on to earn first in the 1000 freestyle 10:05.34) and swam the second leg of the wining 200 freestyle relay team (1:29.32). The Seawolves combined for 17 first-place finishes on the evening.

Stony Brook's Story

Vermont- The Catamounts faced America East rivals New Hampshire this weekend, topping the Wildcats, 174-118, while breaking 12 records. Five pool records, four varsity and three freshmen marks were broken on the day from four separate swimmers. Sophomore Kate Weaver led the squad with three pool record-breaking wins in the 100 (57.60) and 200 (2:02.72) backstroke and the 200 IM (2:08.52). Weaver also swam a leg in the winning 200 medley relay team (1:48.92). Vermont is ranked 18th in the first CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Poll of the season, the highest ranking for the Catamounts in school history.
