Dano, Paey, Labreck and Bass Earn Performer Of The Week Accolades

CAMBRIDGE, Mass- The University of Hartford’s Ariana Bass (Concord High./Penacook, N.H.) and the University of Maine’s Jess Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) earned this week’s female America East Track and Field Performers of the Week while the University of New Hampshire’s Gabe Dano (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) and Brice Paey (Milton, N.H./Coe Brown) earned the accolades for the men.

Bass, a junior, ran for first place in the 500-meter with an IC4A qualifying time of 1:18.88 at the Harvard Invitational this weekend. Bass went on to run the fastest split time of the day as part of the second-place 4x400 relay team.

Labreck, a freshman, earned first in the long jump with a distance of 18-3.75 feet in a dual meet against conference rival New Hampshire. Later, Labreck earned second in the triple jump (38-2.25 feet) and first in the 55 meter hurdles (8.40 seconds). The women fell to the Wildcats, 84-96

Dano earned two individual titles in the Wildcat’s win over visiting Maine, 111-62. The sophomore finished first in the 55 meters with a time of 6.64 seconds and led the pack in the 200 meters, finishing the race in 23.18 seconds.

Paey erased UNH’s 22-year-old record in the shot put during a dual meet against Maine this weekend, propelling the Wildcats to a 111-62 victory. The sophomore’s throw marked in at 57 feet, 3.75 inches and was nearly half a foot beyond the previous record.

Albany- The Great Danes kick of their 2008-09 indoor track and field season after the new year, on Friday, January 9.

Binghamton- The Bearcats will return to action after the holidays on Saturday, January 17 at the West Point Invitational

Boston- The Terriers sent three athletes to compete at the Harvard Invitational this weekend with two earning first-place finishes in their events. Junior Sarah Mosser posted the only sub-five-minute time in the mile run and finished first in the field of 28 runners. For the men, junior transfer Jeff Moreau placed first in the 800-meter run in his first indoor race with the Terriers.

Hartford- The Hawks competed in the Harvard Invitational and earned several Top 10 finishes on the weekend. Highlighting the women was junior Ariana Bass who earned first with an IC4A qualifying time of 1:18.88 in the 500-meter dash. Bass went on to run the fastest split time of the day in the second-place 4x400 relay team. Freshman Kristalena Lamore earned Top 10 finishes in the long jump (5.07m) and the triple jump (10.38). For the men, senior Anthony Oluwanifise continued a strong campaign in the field events, placing third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.76 meters as well as fifth in the long jump with his 6.71-meter jump. Senior Warren Lane earned third in the 500-meter run, posting a time of 1:06.95.

Hartford's Story

Maine- The Black Bears competed against America East foe New Hampshire and, despite several individual victories, came up just short with the women falling, 84-96, and the men, 62-111. Jesse Labreck led the women’s squad winning the long jump (18-3.75 feet) and the 55 meter hurdles (8.40) while placing second in the triple jump (38-2.25 feet). Senior Vicki Tolton won the 500 meter run with a time of 1:15.06 and qualified for IC4As. Freshman Riley Masters won the one-mile run for the men, posting a time of 4:17.10 in his first collegiate meet. Mark Liimakka, a senior, won the pole vault clearing a height of 14-5.5 feet.

Maine's Story

UMBC- The Retrievers will train through the holidays and return to action on January 10 of next year at the Guilden Relays in Lewisburg, PA.

UNH- Multiple school records were erased this weekend as the Wildcats topped visiting conference foe Maine. Sophomore Brice Paey broke the 22-year-old record in the shot put by nearly a half of a foot as he threw for 57 feet, 3.75 inches. Classmate Gabe Dano earned first-place finishes in both the 55 meters (6.64 seconds) and the 200 meters (23.18 seconds), helping to secure the men’s victory, 111-62. For the women, sophomore Camille Quarles broke the school record in the triple jump with her ECAC-qualifying jump of 39 feet, 5.25 inches, and was followed by freshmen Eliza Mackintosh and Danica Goodheart in third and fourth, respectively. Senior Sarah hall earned first in the 200- meters (26.41) and second in the 55 meters (7.38), points that proved valuable in the women’s 96-84 win.

Stony Brook- The Seawolves sent three runners to compete at the Harvard Invitational this past weekend, with each finishing at the top of their events. Junior Laura Huet won the 3,000 meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:52.88, 35 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Juniors Daire Bermingham and Alex Felce finished first and second in the men’s 3,000-meter event, crossing in times of 8:30.01 and 8:33.19, respectively.

Vermont- The Catamounts did not compete this week and will return to action after the first of the year, on January 12.
