Retrievers, Seawolves, Terriers Earn Weekly Swimming And Diving Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass- UMBC’s Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Stony Brook’s Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) won three events each and earned America East male and female Performer of the Week, while Boston’s Tess Waresmith (Dover, Mass./Dover Sherborn) and Andre Watson (Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) swept the diving events and are this week’s male and female Diver of the Week.

Roseberry, a senior, won all three of his individual events against Binghamton this weekend, touching first in the 200 fly (1:56.84) and the 500 free (4:44.44) while setting a UMBC season-best time in the 1,000 free (9:42.85). Roseberry’s dominant performances propelled the Retrievers to a sweep of the conference rivals, topping them, 170-125.

Heuser, a rookie for the Seawolves, broke her second school record of the season while winning three individual events against the University of Massachusetts this past weekend. Touching first in the 1,000- (10:38.83), the 200- (1:53.40) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.36), her time in the 500 free was three seconds faster than the previous school record.

Waresmith remains undefeated in both the 1M and 3M diving events this season, capturing another pair of golds against Syracuse this weekend with scores of 309.83 and 290.03, respectively. The senior has been performer of the week for 10 consecutive weeks, dating back to the 2007-08 season.

Watson, a senior, won both the 1M and 3M diving events against Syracuse this weekend, posting impressive scores of 310.50 and 344.48, respectively. Watson defeated his closest competitor by roughly 60 points in each event.

Binghamton- The Bearcats took on the defending America East Champions this weekend as they traveled to the UMBC Natatorium. The men were defeated 125-170, while the women fell 113-177. The Binghamton divers highlighted the meet, with senior Ryan Graham and freshman Nick Turner sweeping the top two spots in the one- and three-meter events, respectively. For the women, sophomore Elizabeth Esposito placed first on the 1M (190.19) and third on the 3M (196.65).

Binghamton's Story

Boston U.- The Boston University men and women continued their undefeated streak in dual-meet action this weekend, downing Syracuse, 134-107 and 139-92, respectively. The Terriers still reign over the diving events, sweeping the top three spots for the men and women in the 1- and 3-meter events. The squads earned seven first-place finishes each and had a combined five athletes win multiple events. Junior Brigette O’Shaughnessy was a standout for the women, winning the 200 IM (2:08.46) and the 500 free (5:00.89). Arik Seiler, a junior, touched first for the men in the 200 free (1:42.95), 100 free (47.18) and the last leg of the first-place 400 free relay.

Boston's Story

Maine- The Black Bears split in their dual meet against Rhode Island and Bryant, dropping the men to 1-0 and the women 2-2. The men kicked off their season on the right foot beating Bryant, 178-110. Rhode Island managed to hold off the Black Bear women, narrowly defeating them, 158-142. Junior Megan McLean earned first in the 100- (1:10.27) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.64) and played an instrumental role in the Black Bear’s resounding victory over Bryant, 237-51.

Maine's Story

UMBC- The Retrievers hosted America East rival Binghamton this weekend, earning a sweep by defeating the men, 170-125, and the women, 113-177. Senior Evan Roseberry led the men’s squad with three individual golds in the 1,000 free (9:42.85), the 200 fly (1:56.84) and the 500 free (4:44.44). Junior Tereza Kaplanova touched first in two individual events, the 200 backstroke (2:09.24) and the 200IM (2:09.55), and swam a leg of the first place 200 medley relay team. As a program, the Retrievers set 11 season-best times on the day.

UMBC's Story

New Hampshire- The Wildcats did not compete this week, but will return to action on November 8, at Central Connecticut State University and look to bounce back from last week’s defeat at the hands of the Retrievers.

Stony Brook- The Seawolves hosted UMass this weekend, earning a combined ten first-place finishes while falling to the Minutemen women, 176-124, and the men, 176-123. Freshman Darcy Heuser continued to make a name for herself in the pool, winning three individual events, the 1,000- (10:38.83), the 200- (1:53.40) and the 500-free (5:05.36). Her time in the 500 freestyle broke the previous school record by three seconds and landed her name in the record books for the second time this season.

Stony Brook's Story

Vermont- Vermont earned a hard-fought tie at Boston College this weekend with a score of 150-150. The Catamounts came off the block strong earning first-place finishes in the first six events. Kate Weaver paced the squad, earning three individual victories in the 100- (58.51) and 200 backstroke (2:05.88), and the 200IM (2:10.02). In addition, the sophomore swam a leg in the winning 200 medley relay team. Weaver’s efforts were supported by the rest of the squad which earned 12 of 16 possible first-place finishes and had four additional athletes win multiple events.
