CAMBRIDGE,
Mass.- Arik Seiler, a Boston University junior, and Lindsay Sherman, a
UMBC junior, have earned male and female America East Swimmer of
the Week accolades, while Boston University’s Andre Watson and Tess
Waresmith win male and female Diver of the Week for the third
consecutive time.
Seiler swam for first place finishes in three separate events as Boston
University defeated Binghamton 132-111 on Saturday afternoon. Seiler
took gold in the 100 free (47.45), the 200 free (1:42.78) and was the
fourth leg of the winning 400-free relay. The Maine native has kicked
off a dominant season in the pool, setting a personal best in the 200
individual medley last weekend with a time of 1:55.36.
Sherman was the driving force for the Retrievers this weekend, earning
five golds between two days of competition, including all three of her
individual events. In her team’s 136-105 loss to navy, Sherman won the
only individual event of the day in the 200-meter fly (2:19.91) while
swimming a leg of the first-place 400-meter medley relay team. On
Sunday, Sherman continued to shine against conference rivals New
Hampshire, sweeping the 100- and 200-yard fly with season-best times
(57.89 and 2:04.78, respectively), and swimming a leg of the first
place 200-yard medley relay team.
Watson swept both the one- and three-meter diving events (315.10 and
316.13, respectively) as the Boston University men toppled Binghamton
132-111. After three meets and a total of six diving events, Watson
has averaged an incredible score of 323.48.
Waresmith continued her dominance on the one- and three-meter diving
boards, sweeping both events this weekend as the Terriers defeated
Binghamton (187-56) and Vermont (148-95) in their first conference
matchup. Waresmith has won every single diving event so far this
season.
Binghamton- The Bearcats competed in a tri-meet this weekend, heading
to Boston University to take on the Terriers and the Catamounts. Nolan
Slesnick was a standout for the men, touching first in both the 100
free (9:52.27) and the 500 free (4:47.18) and third in the 200 IM
(1:59.00). Teammate Brenno Varanda supported Slesnick’s effort,
winning the 200 IM (1:57.29) and 200 breaststroke (2:09.09), but
Binghamton fell to Boston University, 111-132. For the women,
sophomore Amanda Ciccone took third in the 50 free (25.26) and fifth in
the 100 free (55.17). The women fell to Boston University, 56-187, and
Vermont, 86.5-156.5.
Binghamton's Story
Boston U.- The Terriers hosted conference rivals Vermont and Binghamton
on Saturday, sweeping the weekend on all fronts with the men defeating
Binghamton, 132-111, and the women holding off Vermont, 148-95, and
Binghamton, 187-56. This week’s Swimmer of the Week Arik Seiler
highlighted the men’s competition, winning the 100- and 200-free (47.45
and 1:42.78, respectively). Bridgette O’Shaugnessy took first in the
200 IM (2:10.38) and the 500 free (5:05.53), tallying a third place
finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.45) to her list of medals on the
day. Divers of the Week Andre Watson and Tess Waresmith continued to
add vital points to the Boston University tally, sweeping first place
in all diving events.
Boston's Story
Maine- The Black Bear women hosted their opening meet against Central
Connecticut and Northeastern University, defeating Connecticut,
184-109, while falling to Northeastern 152-141. Senior Colleen Miller
won the 200- and 500- free (1:55.74 and 5:07.32, respectively), and led
the 200- and 400- medley relay teams to second place finishes. Miller
was supported by junior teammate Samantha Graham, who picked up
valuable points with her first place finish in the one-meter diving
event (237.30). The men will kick off their season as they join the
women on Sunday in Rhode Island to face the University of Rhode Island
and Bryant.
Maine's Story
UMBC- After a frustrating loss on Saturday at the hands of Navy
(169-126 for the men, and 136-105 for the women), the UMBC women turned
around and produced 10 season-best event times on Sunday as they
defeated America East rival New Hampshire, 147-126. The men’s
performance was not without highlights, as senior Justin Bronson earned
first in three of his four events against Navy, winning the 100-meter
free (52.52), 200-meter free (1:53.26) and a share of the winning 400
meter free relay title. For the women, Swimmer of the Week Lindsay
Sherman won five goals on the weekend, alongside senior Daniele
Surkovich, who swam season-best times in the 100- and 200- free (52.88
and 1:53.94, respectively).
UMBC's Story
New Hampshire- The Wildcats traveled to Maryland this weekend to take
on UMBC and, despite a valiant effort from last week’s Swimmer of the
Week Jessica Little, fell just short with a 147-126 loss. Little
finished first in three events including the 100-and 200-yard
breaststroke (1:07.66 and 2:22.28, respectively), and the 200-yard IM
(2:10.52).
New Hampshire's Story
Stony Brook- The Seawolves were not active this week, but will host the
University of Massachusetts on Saturday, November 1, and Fordham on
Wednesday, November 5.
Vermont- Traveling to Boston this weekend, the Catamounts took on the
Terriers and the Bearcats, topping Binghamton, 156.5-86.5, while
falling to Boston U., 148-95. Junior Colleen Clark, who is undefeated
in the 200 free this year, earned a pair of first place finishes in the
100- (53.19) and 200- free (1:52.64). The Catamounts also recorded
first place in the 1,000 free (10:21.59) from junior Molly MacMillan,
and the 200 backstroke (2:07.33) from sophomore Kate Weaver.
