Boston's Walkonen, Vermont's Maisey, Earn Second Performer Of The Week Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Boston University senior Andrea Walkonen (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) and Vermont junior Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley Pa./Wissahickon) each earned their second America East male and female Performer of the Week honors for their efforts at the 2008 New England Championships which took place over the weekend.

Walkonen won the women’s race for the second consecutive year, completing the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:19 and out-pacing 300 other runners. The veteran runner finished an impressive 19 seconds ahead of the runner-up and helped lead Boston U. to a fifth-place finish out of 45 teams. The win is Walkonen’s second in as many attempts this season.

Maisey was the first of 37 male America East runners to finish the race, pacing the conference with a time of 24:58 in the 8,000 meter race and earning an eighth-place overall finish. This was Maisey’s fourth consecutive race leading the Catamounts, and his finish marked the first top-10 performance in the New England Championships by a Catamount runner since 1996.

Albany- The Great Danes did not compete this week as they geared up to host the 42nd Annual UAlbany Invitational on October 18. The meet will feature 29 teams on the men’s side and 30 for the women and will be Albany’s last meet before competing in the America East Championship on November 1.

Binghamton- After a week off, the Bearcats return in full force at the Penn State National Open on Friday, October 17, and the UAlbany Invitational on Saturday, October 18.

Boston U.- The Terriers were among 45 women’s teams and 47 men’s teams to compete at the New England Championships in Franklin, Mass. Also in attendance were America East rivals Maine, Vermont, Hartford and New Hampshire. Senior Andrea Walkonen continued her dominance in the annual race running the 5,000-meter course in 17:19, beating out 300 runners and earning her second consecutive first-place finish at the Championship. Junior Erin Lagasse would follow in third-place, helping the women to a fifth-place overall finish. For the men, junior Eric Ashe paced the Terriers and ran the 8,000-meter course in 25:03, earning a 13th-place finish and catapulting the Terriers to sixth overall, their best finish since 2003.

Hartford- Sophomore Jonas Hampton was once again the lead runner for the Hawks this past weekend, setting a personal-best time at the New England Championships on October 11. Hampton finished the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:42 and earned a 145th-place finish out of 316 runners. For the women, senior Elizabeth Foster led the Hawks for the fourth consecutive time this season, completing the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:50, just 1:31 behind the race leader. Hampton’s time earned her 51st-place out of 301 runners, and carried the women to 28th out of 45 teams. The men would finish 42nd out of 47 teams.

Hartford's Story

Maine- The Black Bears, along with four other America East programs, ran in this year’s New England Championship in Franklin, Massachusetts. In a competitive field the men earned 16th-place out of 47 teams, and the women 20th of 45. Leading the way for the women was freshman Corey Conner who earned a 43rd-place finish out of 301 runners with a time of 18:44 in the 5,000-meter race. On the men’s side, freshman Riley Masters crossed in 55th-place out of 316 runners, and posted a time of 25:41 in the 8,000-meter race.

Maine's Story

UMBC- After a week off, the Retrievers will return to action on Friday, October 17, at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton N.J. The Invitational will be the last race for the team before they host the America East Championships on November 1.

New Hampshire- The Wildcats were a dominant force at this year’s New England Championship with the men earning a second-place finish out of 47 teams, and the women seventh out of 45. Leading the men was junior Wesley Dinnan who finished 10th out of 316 runners, posting a time of 25:01 in the 8,000-meter course. On the heels of Dinnan were seniors Ben Jenkins, Nick Decrescenzo and Brent Powers, earning 11th, 14th, and 15th-place, respectively. For the women, senior Kim Povec finished the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:13 earning a 12th-place finish out of 301 runners.

Stony Brook- The Seawolves took a week of rest after last week’s competitive races at the Notre Dame Invitational and the Paul Short Run. The women remain the top ranked squad in the Northeast Region, according to the USTFCCCA poll, which was released on October 13, as they head to Indiana for a Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday, October 18.

Vermont- The Catamounts held their own at this year’s New England Championships taking home an 15th and 11th-place finish for the men and women, respectively. For the men, junior Doug Maisey ran the 8,000-meter course in 24:58 and earned an eighth-place overall finish out of 316 runners. Maisey was the first America East runner to cross for the men in a race where Boston University, New Hampshire, Maine, and Hartford competed. For the women, junior Aly Millett was the first Catamount to cross, finishing the 5,000-meter race in a time of 18:29 and earning a 25th-place overall finish.
