Three Women's Soccer Standouts Receive Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three America East women's soccer players have earned weekly honors after standout out performances last week. New Hampshire's Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) and Stony Brook's Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) shared Player of the Week accolades, while Hartford's Lauren Brodeur (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) was tabbed Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 12.

Sheehan, a senior midfielder, scored in each of UNH’s league wins last week. The 2007 America East Striker of the Year, Sheehan gave her team a 2-0 lead against UMBC on Wednesday and tallied the game-winner as UNH overcame a two-goal deficit to upend Vermont, 3-2, on Sunday. She ranks among league leaders with five goals in just seven games after missing seven due to injury.

Barbuto, a senior midfielder, contributed to both Seawolves’ victories last week, scoring the lone goal in her team’s 1-0 win over Vermont on Thursday and tallying the first score in a 2-1 victory at UMBC on Sunday. Barbuto ranks in the Top 10 among America East leaders in several categories. She is tied for ninth in points (9),  tied for 10th in goals (3) and tied for eighth in assists (3)

Brodeur, a freshman goalkeeper, did not allow a goal in nearly 186 minutes of action last week. She made two stops and recorded a shutout in a scoreless tie against Maine on Thursday.  Brodeur didn’t allow a goal in 75 minutes against Albany on Sunday. She leads America East in save percentage (.882), ranks second in goals against average (0.55) and third in shutouts (5).


Team Notebooks
Albany (3-13, 1-3 America East) dropped both of its matches this past week ... After falling at Dartmouth by a score of 5-0 on Oct. 7 in their last non-conference match of the regular season, the Great Danes took a 4-0 at Hartford on Oct. 12 ... The Great Danes have been shutout eight times this season, including six of the past seven contests ... The defense had allowed 1.33 goals per game over six matches before giving up nine goals in two matches this past week ... Newcomers Kendra Harrell-Vigil (Avondale, Ariz./Westview), Annika Hanson (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep), Jenna Burke (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Katie Norwood (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) have started every match on defense for the Great Danes ... Junior midfielder Jaclyn Rosada (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) is the only other player to start every match, and she has not missed a start in her career which spans 53 matches ... UAlbany plays a pair of America East Conference opponents this week ... The squad hosts Stony Brook on Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. and then travels to Binghamton for a 6 p.m. match on Oct. 19.

Binghamton (5-6-1, 1-3 America East) dropped its lone game of the week - a 4-2 setback to Boston University at the Bearcats Sports Complex.  The game was televised on Fox Soccer Channel and drew a program-record 946 fans... The Bearcats surrendered a goal less than one minute into the contest and fell behind 2-0 15 minutes in.  Twice Binghamton cut its deficit to one goal before Boston sealed the win with a goal in the 67th minute... Sophomore forward Dani Raske (River Vale, N.J./Pascack) scored her league-leading sixth goal in the second half, bending a corner kick directly into the far corner.  Raske leads the America East in goals and points (16)... Junior keeper Jen McEachron (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) made eight saves...  Binghamton is tied for sixth place with four games remaining.  The Bearcats are looking to qualify for the America East tournament for the fifth consecutive season.  

Boston University (9-5-1, 4-0-0 America East) extended its unbeaten streak to six games with wins over Binghamton, 4-2, and Maine, 1-0, last week ... The Terriers opened the week with their first-ever nationally televised game on Fox Soccer Channel ... The squad came through, tying a season high for goals in a game with four ... Junior Mara Osher (Rockville, Md./Stone Ridge) and sophomore Lina Cords (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) each tallied a goal and an assist, while junior Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass./Andover) and freshman Jessica Luscinski (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) also lit up the scoreboard ... On Sunday, BU returned to Nickerson Field and edged Maine, 1-0, as senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) scored the game’s lone goal in the 52nd minute off a rebound in the six-yard box ... BU will continue its homestand with New Hampshire on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Stony Brook on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hartford (6-4-4, 3-1-1 America East) is unbeaten in its last four games after posting a scoreless tie at Maine and a 4-0 victory over Albany last week... Against Maine, Hartford missed on the game’s best scoring opportunity in the second half, failing to convert on a penalty kick. Despite the miss, freshman Lauren Brodeur (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) helped the Hawks earn a point by posting her fifth shutout of the season. She made two saves in 110 minutes against the Black Bears... The four goals against the Great Danes were a season high for the Hawks. Junior Laura Guigli (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) scored twice while classmate Becky Flowers (Santee, Calif./Santana) and sophomore Mary Beth Hamilton (Columbia, Conn./Mercy) each added a goal and an assist. Senior Kacey Busque (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) also added a pair of assists to increase her team-leading total to seven. Hartford’s defense allowed only one shot and recorded its seventh shutout of the season... Brodeur didn’t allow a goal in 185 minutes played last week and saw her goals-against average drop to 0.55 on the season... Hartford will next host Binghamton on Thursday, October 16 at 6 p.m. The Hawks will also visit New Hampshire on Sunday, October 19 at 1 p.m.

Maine (5-3-5, 2-2-1 America East) tied Hartford 0-0 at home before falling at Boston University 1-0...Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) notched her third straight shutout, and 7th of the season...Phillips now has 34 career shutouts...Phillips made four saves, including one on a penalty kick...The Hawks outshot Maine 10-to-seven...Claire Robbins (Montreal, Quebec/CEJEP John Abbott) cleared a ball off the line in the last minute to keep the game scoreless...The game against Hartford was Maine’s 7th overtime game of the season...At Boston University on Sunday, Maine was outshot 16-to-three, but only a five-to-one margin in shots on goal...Boston University scored the game’s lone goal in the 52nd minute...Phillips made four saves in net for Maine...Phillips’ shutout streak was ended at 370:45...Phillips’ goals against average is a solid 0.54 on the year...Veronique Fleury (Montreal, Quebec/College Saint Sacrement) had a shot cleared off the line by a Terrier defender in the closing minutes...Maine has 70 shots on goal this season to its opponents’ 63...Maine returns to action on Wednesday at Harvard at 3 p.m. and hosts Vermont on Sunday at 1 p.m.

UMBC (2-13-0, 1-4-0 America East) dropped a pair of America East Conference games last week... The Retrievers fell at New Hampshire, 3-0, on Oct. 9, then to Stony Brook at home, 2-1, on Oct. 12... Senior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) made 10 saves on the week... Sophomore midfielder Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas Moore Prep) scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the seventh minute against the Seawolves... Freshman midfielder Danielle Kell (Willards, Md./Parkside) was credited with the assist after sending a parallel pass to Warrington, who headed the ball into the back of the net from five yards out... Warrington’s three goals equal her total from her 2007 rookie campaign... She leads the Retrievers with six points and 28 shots on the season... Next up for the Retrievers is an America East battle at Vermont on Oct. 16, followed by their final non-conference match of the year at in-state rival Navy on Oct. 19.

New Hampshire (5-8-1, 4-1-0 America East) went 2-0-0 last week, blanking UMBC at home, 3-0, and rallying past Vermont at home, 3-2 ... senior forward Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) netted a pair of goals during the week, giving UNH an insurance cushion versus UMBC when she made it 2-0, and notching the game-winner against Vermont to complete UNH’s comeback from a 2-0 deficit ... Sheehan now has five goals and leads the conference in both goals per game (0.71) and points per game (1.43) after missing seven games due to injury this season ... sophomore midfielder Amy Avitabile (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) was also huge for the Wildcats, collecting three assists ... Avitabile, who is now one off the conference lead in assists (6), set up the game-winner against UMBC and then UNH’s first two goals versus Vermont that tied the game ... senior forward Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) tallied the game-winner versus UMBC and now has six goals, which ties her for the conference lead ... senior midfielder Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) sealed the game versus UMBC when she gave UNH a three-goal advantage ... junior forward/midfielder Shaunna Kaplan (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) recorded an assist on the play, tying her with Avitabile for second place in the conference in assists (6) ... freshman midfielder Carole LeBlanc (Grand-Digue, New Brunswick/Brewster Academy) netted the equalizer versus Vermont to erase its 2-0 advantage ... the goal was LeBlanc’s second of her career ... junior forward/midfielder Morgan Keefe (South Burlington, Vt./South Bugrlington) scored UNH’s first goal against Vermont ... not only did the goal help chip away at the lead of her hometown university, but it was also the first goal of Keefe’s collegiate career ... senior goalkeeper Nikki Golding (Milton, Mass./Milton) made four saves against UMBC to post her first shutout this season and keep her 2008 conference record perfect (3-0-0) ... Golding is now 7-0-0 all-time versus conference opponents ... Golding also made five saves against Vermont in the second half ... junior goalkeeper Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) made three saves against Vermont in the second half to record her second win of the season ... UNH leads the conference in goals (22), assists (21) and points (65) ... the Wildcats return to action Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. when they hit the road to battle Boston University in a rematch of last season’s title game.

Stony Brook (7-6-0, 3-1-0 America East) won both of its games this week, defeating Vermont 1-0 on Thursday before beating UMBC 2-1 on Sunday afternoon ... Senior Brooke Barbuto scored two goals on the week and is now tied for the team lead with nine points ...She has now recorded a point in four straight games ... Barbuto scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute in the Seawolves 1-0 victory over Vermont on Thursday night ... Barbuto then scored SBU’s first goal in the 2-1 win over UMBC on Sunday afternoon ... Freshman Holly Razzaghi scored the game-winning goal against  UMBC in the 58th minute ... Razzaghi’s goal against UMBC was also the first of her collegiate goal ... Junior Amanda Hemme recorded her first career shutout and victory on Thursday against Vermont, making five saves ... Hemme made four saves in the victory over UMBC on Sunday ... The Seawolves already have three road victories this season after recording just two all of last season ... Stony Brook does not have a tie this season after recording five a season ago.

Vermont (2-12-0, 0-4-0 America East) hit the road for the first time in league play and dropped both games, falling 1-0 at Stony Brook on a goal in the 73rd minute and then lost 3-2 at New Hampshire on a goal in the 87th minute ... The Catamounts held a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats in the first half, but UNH scored three unanswered goal to erase the deficit ... Junior, midfielder Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year, against New Hampshire ... Head coach Kwame Lloyd has used 14 different starting lineups in 14 games this season ... UVM hosts UMBC on Thursday (Oct. 16) at 1 p.m. and travels to Maine on Sunday (Oct. 19) this week.
