CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- In a weekend of narrow, one-goal games, Boston University's Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Virginia Commonwealth) and New Hampshire's Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vermont/Kimball Union Academy) were tabbed the America East field hockey player and rookie of the week, respectively. Lloyd provided all the scoring in Boston U.'s 2-0 victory over No. 19 Providence on Sunday, scoring once in each half to help the Terriers earn their second win over a ranked team this season. Lloyd also kick-started the Terriers' comeback victory against Fairfield on Saturday, as the Stags took an early 2-0 lead before Lloyd got Boston U. on the board with a goal in the 45th minute. The Terriers went on to a 3-2 win to move into sole possession of first place in the America East standings.
Frates extended her point-scoring streak to six games with a goal against Dartmouth and an assist on the game-winning goal at Maine. Her goal against Dartmouth helped the Wildcats erase a two-goal deficit and leveled the scored, 2-2 just 1:46 into the second half. Frates set up UNH's fourth goal of the game on Saturday, which came in the 47th minute and gave the 'Cats a two-goal advantage at Maine.
Boston University took over first-place in the America East standings with a 2-0 record in the league with the 3-2 victory over Fairfield, while three teams follow closely behind with 1-1 records. Vermont defeated Albany, 2-1, and New Hampshire beat Maine, 4-3, on Saturday in conference action. Play picks up again on Friday, October 17 when Vermont visits New Hampshire for a 4 p.m. game.

The Great Danes fell to conference foe Vermont, 2-1, on the road, and lost to #6 Connecticut, 2-1, in overtime at Alumni Turf Field... Senior midfielder Michelle Simpson (Middlesbrough, England/University of Teesside) recorded four goals in three games last week... She scored two goals in the win over Siena, and tallied the team’s lone goals against Vermont and Connecticut... Junior forward Nicole Savage (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) added two goals against Siena, bringing her total to six on the season... Sophomore forward Alysia Hough (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) added the final score against the Saints, while Michele Polizois (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and Jess Lindsay (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) had assists... Senior goalkeeper Ashley Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) made ten saves on the week for a .714 save percentage... The Great Danes will return to America East Conference action on Saturday, on the road at Fairfield.
Boston University (7-7, 2-0 America East) posted a two-win weekend to even its record and move into sole possession of first place in the America East standings... On Sunday, the Terriers posted a 2-0 victory at No. 19 Providence, one day after earning a 3-2 come-from-behind conference victory at home against Fairfield... After allowing two early goals against the Stags, Boston U. reeled off three unanswered goals, capped by a tally from junior Haley Robinson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) on a corner after regulation time expired... Robinson became the 11th different Terrier to record a goal this season... Junior Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Virginia Commonwealth) scored both goals against the Friars and scored the Terriers' first goal against Fairfield... Junior Gabby Hajjar (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) registered a goal and added the game-winning assist versus the Stags... Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) stopped all six shots she faced against Providence to earn her fourth shutout of the season... Senior Sheena Berry (Edinburgh, Scotland/Univ. of Edinburgh) earned an assist on Lloyd's goal in the Fairfield game... The win over Providence was the Terriers' second over a ranked team this season... Boston U. will host Maine on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 4 p.m. as part of its 2008 Alumnae Weekend.
Fairfield University (4-10, 1-1 America East) fell short in its attempt to remain umbeaten in America East play by dropping a 3-2 decision at Boston University. The Stags scored twice in the opening seven minutes of the game but the Terriers came back with three unanswered goals, including the winning score with no time left on the clock...Fairfield recorded just two shots in the first half but scored on both attempts. Fairfield was outshot by Boston University by a 24-6 count in the game, Fairfield has been outshot in four of its last five games, but won two of those four contests (Cornell and Vermont)...Marit Westenberg played a role in both goals by scoring the first goal and assisting on the second. The freshman is currently tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points (five goals, three assists), the same numbers shared by senior Emily Janis...Fairfield plays three of its final four games at home this year, where Fairfield owns a 4-3 record. The Stags host Albany, New Hampshire, and Yale before finishing up the regular season on the road against Maine. Fairfield’s lone game this week takes place at home against Albany on October 18.

Senior forward Sarah Craigue (Concord, N.H./Concord) recorded her first career three-goal game and a personal-best six points to lift the Wildcats to the road win vs. Maine... Freshman midfielder Kate Collins Smyth (Parteen, County Claire, Ireland/Crescent College Comprehensive) recorded her first career multiple-assist game with two against the Black Bears... On Saturday senior Maegan Luce (Hartford, Vt./Hartford) scored both goals as the Catamounts defeated Albany 2-1 at Moulton Winder Field ... Sophomore Joanna Berger (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) recorded her first career point with an assist on Luce’s second score ... Junior Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) earned the win in goal with three saves, as she moves into sole possession of second place all-time at Vermont in wins with 23 ... The last 10 meetings between Vermont and Albany have now each been decided by one goal ... With her two goals, Luce moves into a tie for fifth place all-time in school history with 29 for her career ... On Sunday junior Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) scored twice and Berger earned her first career goal as Vermont topped Brown 3-1 ... The Cats held an 11-0 shot advantage in the first half and 21-9 for the game ... UVM is 4-0 at home this year, has won eight straight overall and 15 of its last 16 at Moulton Winder Field ... Sunday marked the second straight game that Vermont had a player score twice ... The Catamounts return to action on Friday when they travel for an America East game at New Hampshire (4 p.m.) and then will be at Providence on Sunday (1 p.m.) in their final road game of the regular season.
