UMBC Sweeps Swimming Weekly Awards; Boston U's Watson Named Top Male Diver

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- UMBC swept the Men's and Women's Swimming Performers of the Week accolades, with Rasmus Kutt (Tallinn, Estonia/Gustav Adolf Gymnazium) taking home the men's award, while Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/J.G. Jarkovskeho) earned the women's honor. Boston University's Andre Watson (Hempstead, N.Y.) was named the Men's Diving Performer of the Week, while there were no women's nominees. The conference made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon for the week ending January 28.

Kutt, a sophomore, led sweeps of both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 55.28 and 1:55.92, respectively, in the Retrievers win over Marist on Saturday. He finishes the dual-meet season undefeated in the 200 back after adding his ninth consecutive victory in the event on Saturday. Kutt also swam on the second-place 200 medley relay squad, which turned in a time of 1:37.23, just five one-hundredths of a second behind the first-place relay.

Kaplanova, a sophomore, won four events lead the UMBC women to victory over Marist on Saturday. The sophomore led a sweep of the 200 breast with time of 2:22.63 and won the 100 back in 1:01.25 before. She also swam legs on the winning 200 free relay team (1:41.22) and the 200 medley relay squad (151.70)..

Watson, a junior, swept the diving events in the Terriers' meet with Harvard on Saturday. He posted a score of 348.45 on the 1-meter board, which was 31.27 points higher than the nearest competitor. The performance was the highest point total in 1-meter events in America East this season. Watson also captured the 3-meter event with a score of 358.28

Binghamton
The Binghamton University swimming and diving squads split its final dual meet of the 2007-08 season against visiting Colgate Saturday afternoon from the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The men's team swam past the Raiders 175-110 to record its seventh consecutive dual meet win and improve to 7-4 on the season. On the women's side, Colgate took down the host Bearcats, 193-101. Boston University
The Boston University men's swimming and diving team dropped a 176-120 decision to undefeated Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Competition Pool. The Terriers fall to 7-2 in dual-meet action. [Boston's Story]

Maine
The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the Boston College Eagles Saturday afternoon. The men's team lost 229.5-102.5 while the women's team fell by a score of 207-127. [Maine's Story]

UMBC
the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams rolled over Marist to complete the 2007-08 dual meet season on Saturday. The Retriever men (6-1) bested the Red Foxes (6-3) by a score of 179-119, while the women (4-4) prevailed over Marist (5-4) by a score of 155-137. [UMBC Story]

New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team placed first in the 200-yard medley relay for the sixth time in seven meets, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell to Dartmouth College, 141-102, and to Princeton University, 148-93. [New Hampshire Story]

Vermont

The University of Vermont women's swimming and diving team defeated Providence College 143-94 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The win is the Catamounts' ninth straight as they close out the regular season with an 11-5 mark. [Vermont Story]
