Baltimore,Md.--UMBC’s two new assistant women’s lacrosse coaches, Quinn Carney and Kelly Berger were both selected to the 2007-08 U.S. Elite Team following a tryout on Aug. 5 at UMBC Stadium.

A total of 98 players competed in the tryout, which was conducted by U.S. Lacrosse, and Carney and Berger were among 24 players selected to the Elite Team. An additional 24 players were named to the Developmental Team.

“To have two people on my staff who continue to play at the international level and serve as ambassadors for the sport will be tremendous for our players,” UMBC head coach Courtney Connor said.

Carney and Berger are both veterans of the U.S. National Team program. Carney, a two-time All-American who played on four consecutive national championship teams at Maryland (1998-2001), has played in two World Cups (2001, 2005) and enters her 10th year with the program.

“I’m excited to add another year to my U.S. National Team career, and I can’t wait to play with the team again,” Carney said.

Berger, also a two-time All-American from James Madison, is in her third year with the National Team.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the U.S. team and to represent the country,” Berger said. “The team is a great group of players, and you learn from the best.”

The next activity for the U.S. teams will be the Stars and Stripes Weekend in Portland, Ore., in October, featuring exhibition games against collegiate teams from the University of California, Oregon and Stanford. The teams will also compete at the Champions Challenge Weekend in January and will serve as instructors at various National Team clinics throughout the country.

The National Team program exists as a training program for U.S. teams for international play and to help promote and develop women’s lacrosse around the country.
