Estremera, Hampson Open Cross Country Season With Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--University at Albany's Ricardo Estremera and Stony Brook University's Jessica Hampson each finished first in their respective races during 2007's opening weekend to receive the season's first America East Cross Country Men's and Women's Performers of the Week. The conference made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon for the week ending September 3.

Estremera (San Juan, Puerto Rico/University) led the Great Danes to a second-place finish at the Monmouth University Cross Country Kick-Off on Saturday, September 1. Estremera finished first individually at the 6K event for the second-straight season, posting a winning time of 18:51.6.

Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) had an outstanding start to the season, taking home the individual title at the Seawolves Invitational and helping Stony Brook to the team title. The sophomore finished the 4K course in a time of 15:35.3, taking control of the race early and beating out the rest of the field by 19 seconds. Hampson's victory was key, as the Seawolves won the team title by just one point over Quinnipiac.

Binghamton
Freshmen Gerald McDonald (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and Ashley Horton (Candor, N.Y.) each placed seventh in their respective races as the Binghamton cross country squads launched their 2007 seasons at the Seawolf Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Bearcat men finished third out of eight squads while the women were third out of seven teams. [Binghamton Story]

Boston University
The Terriers did not run this past weekend, but will open their 2007 season by hosting Northeastern, Marist and Rhode Island at Franklin Park in Boston on Friday, September 7.

Hartford
The Hawks will kick-off the 2007 campaign on Friday, September 7 at the Seawolves Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Maine
The Black Bears were not in action last week. Maine will open its 2007 season this weekend at the Pre-America East Championship Meet on Saturday in Sunken Meadow, N.Y.

UMBC
The UMBC men's and women's cross country teams began the 2007 season at the Mount St. Mary's Dual 5K's in Emmitsburg, Md. on Friday. The men finished with a 2-2-1 record, while the women ended the day with a 1-4 record. [UMBC Story]

New Hampshire
The Wildcats men's and women's teams each earned a split of a tri-meet against Providence and Boston College. Cathy Parker finished the three-plus mile course at UNH's Colelge Woods first in 17:07. On the men's sice, Robert Edgerton finished in third-place as the Wildcats' top finisher.

Stony Brook
Stony Brook's women's cross country team started off the season in impressive fashion on Friday, capturing the team title in a seven-team field at the Seawolves Invitational. Sophomore Jessica Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y.) won the individual title in the first event held on Stony Brook's new cross country course. On the men's side the Seawolves finished fourth in the nine-team field, led by sophomore Alex Felce's (Stroud, England) third-place finish. [Stony Brook Story]

Vermont
The University of Vermont men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2007 campaign at the Stony Brook Invitational over the weekend. The women's team placed fifth overall and the men's team finished sixth.
