Former University of Hartford back Sonja Fuss earned a goal medal after Team Germany defeated Brazil, 2-0, at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 at Shanghai Sunday (Deptember 30). Fuss was a reserve defender for the Germans, who beame the first team to go through a major senior competition without yielding a goal. Germany outscored its opponents, 21-0, during the World Cup.
Fuss played two years for the Hawks under head coach Mark Krikorian. Hartford was 35-10-2 in her two seasons, and participated in the NCAA Tournament each season. In 1999, Fuss was an integral part of the Hawk defense as Hartford advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Princeton, a 1-0 upset at defending national champion Florida and a 3-2 triple-overtime win at Virginia. Penn State ended the Hawks bid for an NCAA Championship with a 2-0 decision at State College in the round of 8.
Fuss, who has more than 50 international caps with the German National team since 1996, also plays for the German Club FCR Duisburg. She played on the bronze-medal winning German team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
