CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Hayley Hamada
tallied two goals and an assist to help the No. 19 Boston University
field hockey team post a 3-0 road victory against No. 15 Virginia on
Sunday afternoon at University Hall Turf Field. Senior Sarah Shute
opened the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute for the Terriers, who
extended their win streak to five games and improved to 8-2 on the
year.
In a game played in temperatures over 90 degrees, the Terriers
played outstanding on the defensive end and took advantage of their
offensive opportunities.
"This really was a mature and courageous effort by our team," said head coach Sally Starr. "The
heat was draining and Virginia played us very tough, but I'm impressed
and really proud of the physical and mental effort."
Freshman goalkeeper Kim Kastuk earned her second shutout in as many days, stopping all four of the Cavaliers' shots on goal.
"Our recruiting over the past few seasons has been geared to put
together a group that can compete with schools from the ACC or any
other conference," said Starr. "This team can do that and they've
really made the effort to get better with each week and each game."
Shute's goal gave her 90 points for her career, helping her pass Kim Kos for fourth place on the Terriers' career points list.
Each team recorded nine shots on the day, while Virginia held an 8-4 lead in short corners.
"Our corner defense was the best its been this season," added Starr. "It was a quality shutout for Kim, and Sarah Hudak and Lizzie Perreault played outstanding."
The Terriers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 28, when they open
up their America East conference schedule with a home contest against
New Hampshire. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
