INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? Former University of Vermont track and field standout Kristal Kostiew-Yush ’04 was the runner up in the women’s hammer throw at the U.S. National Track and Field Outdoor Championships held over the weekend.
Yush, who was ranked as the #7 hammer thrower in the country by Track and Field News during the 2006 season, posted a throw of 223’11” (68.23m) to earn second place. With the second place finish, Yush has qualified for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (July 13-29) and the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan (Aug. 24-Sept. 1).
A 2004 graduate of the University of Vermont, Yush was a 14-time America East Champion and four-time America East Field Performer of the Year. She also received the prestigious Academic All-America honor as a senior.
Yush is a full-time physical education teacher at Montville (Conn.) High School. She is also an assistant track and field coach at the University of Rhode Island with her husband Derek Yush.
Yush is following in the footsteps of another former UVM hammer thrower, Anna Norgren-Mahon ’96. She went on to represent the United States in the hammer throw at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Mahon was inducted into the UVM Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 2006.
