TAIPEI, Taiwan - The Boston University men's basketball team traveled across the world to compete against universities from Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Canada and came out on top, defeating the University of British Columbia, 105-98, in double overtime in the Kainan Tournament championship game on Thursday, May 31.
Boston U. took on host Kainan University on Tuesday, May 28; Tohoku University on May 29 and the Union of Vietnamese Universities on May 30. The Terriers had no problem shaking off whatever rust accrued on an around-the-world plane trip to easily defeat all three opponents by double digits and advance to the tournament championship.
There the Terriers met the University of British Columbia on May 31 at 3 p.m. Western Standard Time (WST) and defeated UBC. Boston U. was led by freshman Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.), who tallied a career-best 33 points. Lowe was the hero of the day for the Terriers, knocking in the game-tying three that sent the game into the second OT.
Red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.), red-shirt sophomore Matt Wolff (Walpole, Mass.), and true freshman Carlos Strong (Portland, Maine) each scored 20 points for the Terriers.
Boston U. accomplished both of the major goals on the trip, winning the championship and fostering a cultural exchange with Taiwanese people. The Terriers visited with Kainan students throughout the week, attracting a whole new fan base. The championship game itself felt like a home contest - 3,000 people cheering on the Terriers in Boston U. t-shirts.
