BALTIMORE, Md. -- University of New Hampshire women and Albany men lead after day one of the 2007 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at UMBC in Baltimore, Md. Competition will conclude on Sunday.
The Wildcats built an early lead through six-events with 65 points outdistancing their closest competition Boston University (39.50) by 25.50 points. Vermont (35.50) sits in third, while defending champion Albany (30) is currently fourth. Binghamton (21), Maine (19), UMBC (13), Stony Brook (11) and Hartford (0) round out the nine-team field.
Catherine Parker's America East record-breaking performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase has helped the Wildcats develop the lead heading into the final day of competition. She finished in 10:13.69 breaking the former mark of 10:32.76 that was set last year.
On the men's side, Albany (81 points) looks to be in good shape at a title defense as it leads by 15 points over second-place New Hampshire (66). Binghamton is 40 points off the lead at 41 points, Maine is fourth with 19 points, while host UMBC (18) sits in fifth place. Boston University (17), Vermont (12), Stony Brook (11) and Hartford (8) round out the nine-team field after seven events complete.
Luke Schoen's conference record-breaking performance in the pole vault has helped the Great Danes jump out to the early lead. Schoen shares the record-breaking spot light with Binghamton's Rory Quiller, who also broke the conference record in the pole vault. The duo vaulted 16-08.75, Quiller was awarded first-place based upon an attempts tie-breaker.
