STONY BROOK, N.Y. ? Second-seeded Boston University downed No. 3 New Hampshire, 16-4, while No. 4 Albany upset No. 1 Stony Brook, 10-7, in semifinal action of the 2007 America East Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Terriers and Albany advance to Sunday’s title game at 1 p.m.
In game one of the day, junior Molly Collins (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) recorded game highs of five goals and seven draw controls to help the No. 2-seed Boston University advance to the title game of the America East Championship for the ninth straight season, first time under new head coach Liz Robertshaw, with a 16-4 semifinal victory over third-seeded New Hampshire on Friday afternoon at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium.
Boston U. took a 7-0 lead into halftime and scored the first 10 goals of the game before the Wildcats got on the board with 25:55 remaining the second half.
In the night cap, the fourth-seeded Great Danes captured a 10-7 upset win over top-seeded Stony Brook. In a game of runs it was a 6-0 second-half run that helped Albany erase a 6-4 deficit and went on to earn the win. The run included a pair of goals by freshman Kayla Best (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River).
The Great Danes opened up a 3-0 lead out of the gate thanks in part to a pair of goals by Christine Grueniger (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). Stony Brook answered with five-straight goals including two by Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore) to build a 5-3 lead and went into the half up 5-4. They build a 6-4 lead early in the second half before the late Great Dane run.
Albany reaches its first-ever America East Championship title game under first-year head coach Lindsey Hart.
Albany and Boston University will meet for the conference title for the first time in league history. Albany is in search of its first-ever America East Championship in women’s lacrosse, while Boston University will be making its ninth-straight title game appearance as well, with four victories in those contest.
