Four days after concluding his brilliant baseball career, Binghamton senior first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) has earned the highest academic honor for a student-athlete. Hitchcock was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, the school learned on Wednesday. He was one of 12 infielders from across the country (283 Division I teams) to be selected.
Hitchcock, the America East Player of the Year and four-time conference all-star, led the Bearcats to a record-breaking campaign this spring. Binghamton won a school-record 28 games, captured the America East regular season title and finished runnerup at the postseason tournament. He hit .366 with five home runs and 39 RBI in 47 games this season, earning first team all-conference honors for the third time.
He departs Binghamton as the career leader in batting average (.360), hits (246), RBI (150), doubles (48) and walks (95).
Hitchcock was recognized twice previously as an Academic All-District selection but now adds national academic honors to his resume. He had a 3.55 grade-point average in accounting at Binghamton.
