GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Senior Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y.) broke the meet record in the pole vault and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the opening day of the East Region Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In the process, he becomes the first individual in any sport at Binghamton to win a NCAA Regional title since the program moved up to the Division I level six years ago.
The 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held at Cal-State Sacramento June 6-9. Quiller was 13th at last year's meet, which was also held in Sacremento, with a jump of 16-11.
Back in March, Quiller finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championship and earned All-America honors with his previous lifetime-best jump of 18-0 1/2. Should he finish among the top eight in two weeks, he will become the first Binghamton Division I athlete to earn multiple All-America honors in the same academic year.
The NCAA East Regional Championships conclude on Saturday.
