FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Sophomore shortstop Sean Donovan (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) cracked a two-run double to pace a three-run third inning that helped lift No. 3 UAlbany to a, 5-2, win over No. 2 Stony Brook in opening round action on Thursday night at the 2007 America East Championship held at Farmingdale State College.
The win marks the first time the Great Danes won an opening-round game and is just their second tournament win since joining America East. Albany defeated Northeastern, 8-1, at the 2004 championship.
Donovan went 1-for-5 with a two-run, while Tom Hill (Emerson, N.J./Emerson/Elon) had a pair of hits.
For Stony Brook, Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, while Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y./George Washington) went 2-for-4 .
Albany's John Naples (Troy, N.Y./Catholic Central/Briarcliff C.C.) improved to 8-2 tossing seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits.
Tom Koehler threw 6.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. He falls to 5-8 on the season.
