BOSTON -- Binghamton, Stony Brook, Maine and Albany have clinched berths to the 2007 America East Baseball Championship on May 24-27. By virtue of their victory over UMBC in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the Seawolves have locked up a top-two seed and will host the conference championship at fellow SUNY school Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, N.Y.
However, the conference's regular season title and top seed in the tournament will be determined during the final day of the regular season. Tomorrow, Maine and Binghamton are slated to play a doubleheader starting at 12 noon in Orono. That twin billing will answer all questions regarding the postseason seeding.
With its win in game two of today's doubleheader with Maine, Binghamton has claimed at least a share of the 2007 America East regular-season title. The Bearcats can claim sole possession of the title and top seed in the tournament with a win in either game of tomorrow's twin billing with Maine. However, if Maine sweeps tomorrow's doubleheader, Stony Brook and Binghamton would be co-regular-season champions, with the Seawolves earning the top seed by virtue of a tie-breaker.
With a win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader with Binghamton, the Black Bears punched their ticket to the postseason and an opportunity to play for their third-straight conference title.
By winning two of the first three games against Vermont, Albany has qualified for the postseason for the second-straight season. The Great Danes will finish either third or fourth.
Maine, who currently sits in third place, must win both games of the twin billing to earn the third seed. All other scenarios would give Albany the third seed and the Black Bears would finish fourth.
The winner of the double-elimination America East Championship is awarded the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
America East Baseball Championship Tickets are $6 for adults and $2 for students.
